Ashley McBryde reflected on Dolly Parton’s lasting influence on her during an appearance on CBS Mornings. While chatting with host Norah O’Donnell, the Arkansas native opened up about Parton’s passing and the outpouring of tributes from fellow artists honoring the country music icon since her death.

“All of the tributes, seeing people wearing butterfly pins, that has been beautiful. There’s not anyone in country music who wasn’t mentored and influenced by Dolly Parton. And if someone were to try to say that that wasn’t the case, they’re just lying,” she said.

McBryde also revealed that one of the most meaningful gifts she received from the country legend was something as simple as a tube of chapstick. During previous interviews, McBryde has shared that she worked for Parton for a short time after first moving to Nashville. During that time, Parton gave her a tube of chapstick that McBryde held onto for nearly two decades.

“The best chapstick on the planet,” she joked with O’Donnell.

“And I kept it so long that all the words have been rubbed off of it. I used to use it as a secret power. If I needed a little extra confidence to sit across from anyone in an interview and put that chapstick on and I felt like I had a little bit of another presence with me.”

Beyond the tube of lip balm, McBryde said the gifts Parton passed down to her go far beyond anything material and continue to influence her as an artist.

“She gave me gifts that you can’t see, but you can hear her banter over the years live from stage, stuff from her live albums that I memorized even as a kid. They still affect my performance today.”
