According to PEOPLE, there was an explosion at a manhole that caused a series of fires and widespread power outages across the Texas Tech campus. The school issued a mass evacuation, canceled classes and announced the closure of the Lubbock campus.
“TechAlert! There is a power outage on the Texas Tech University campus in Lubbock affecting multiple areas,” the university wrote at 7:30 p.m. local time on Wednesday. “Additionally, we are evacuating the Engineering Key due to a gas odor. Please follow evacuation instructions if you are in the area, and stay tuned for updates.”
Campus Remains Closed For Two Days
The Lubbock Fire Rescue responded to the incident in a press release stating, “Engine 4 arrived first on scene and found multiple manhole covers with active fire and smoke issuing from them…Engine 4 quickly requested additional units to help to mitigate the rapidly escalating scene, and a second alarm was called by Battalion 1 for manpower.”
While power has restored to some parts of the university, students and staff are being asked to avoid returning to the campus to collect their belongings until further notice. Luckily, the fire department confirmed that no injuries were reported. The campus will remain closed on Thursday, March 13, and Friday, March 14.
The statement regarding Brooks & Dunn’s show confirmed that any previously purchased tickets will be honored for the new date. Additional tickets are also available here.
