Carly Pearce is opening up about her marriage to Michael Ray.

In a recent interview on the podcast Off The Vine with Kaitlyn Bristowe, the “I Hope You’re Happy Now” singer looked back on the moment Ray caught her eye and shared the secret to their success as a couple.

Explaining that they had crossed each other’s paths “through the years,” Pearce recalled out the night she took interest in Ray.

“He had a record deal before me, so I would see him out and kind of not talk to him, but I thought like, ‘oh he’s so hot.’ That was kind of like my first thought of him,” she explained. “Then, we started playing radio shows together when ‘Every Little Thing’ was out and I don’t know how to explain it…’Cause it sounds super creepy. But the only way that I do know how to explain it is I was dating somebody for going on four years at this point and was looking at this person that I’m playing these radio shows with thinking about them in a way that I shouldn’t have been when I didn’t even know him. And I’m looking at him and I’m like, ‘oh my gosh.’”

It appears that Pearce didn’t put on a good poker face because other people started noticing her attraction to Ray.

“My keyboard player at the time was one of my best girlfriends. After the show, she was like, ‘why are you being so weird around Michael?’ I was like, ‘I don’t know. I don’t know.’” she admitted. “And I remember telling someone, even if I never date Michael Ray, I have to break up with this person because I have stronger feelings and more thoughts for this person that I don’t even know than somebody that I’ve been with for four years. And so, that was like a big moment for me and I’m kind of shy. And so I just started messaging him on Instagram, like for like a few months and we hung out one night, like we agreed to hang out one night and that was kinda it.”

After dating for several months, the couple got engaged in December of 2018. And even though Pearce admits she never thought she would “date, let alone marry another artist,” the couple tied the knot in October of 2019. The rest is history.

When asked what the “secret” to their relationship is, Pearce responded with a simple answer.

“I think like finding someone that is your friend and also can support your, you know, we both grew up the same way of wanting to do this for a living and grew up loving the same kind of music,” she explained. “He loves the classic country and bluegrass, and he loves like the real, the Opry and all of those elements. So I think…our hearts are kind of like, they bleed the same way, if that makes sense.”

Carly Pearce and Michael Ray recently appeared on the Grand Ole Opry together where she debuted a new song in honor of her late producer, Busbee.
