Even though it’s been less than a year since Cody Johnson released his Leather Deluxe project, he’s already thinking ahead. The Texas native revealed he’s hard at work on his next project and is ready to show fans a new, “spicier,” side to him.

With his previous work, fans have seen Johnson tackle themes of love, relationships, life in Texas, and so much more. And while he doesn’t want to stray too far from the kind of music that both he and fans yearn for, he’s also been feeding off the pressure to take his next project to the next level, leaving him inspired to push boundaries with slightly steamier tracks.

“I don’t want to go off the beaten path,” he told media, according to Everything Nash. “But I do want to do something just a little bit spicier. You’ve got to follow up. You hit a home run. Next time you come up to the plate, people are kind of expecting a homerun. And I feel that pressure. It’s a good pressure. That kind of pressure is a privilege to know that I’m in a position where I can really go hit it out of the park again.”

He confirmed that he is “definitely” working on recording new music. In fact, Johnson revealed that his creative wheels were starting to turn even before Leather Deluxe had been released to the world yet. Diving straight into his next project gives the country star plenty of time to figure out his next direction without feeling rushed by a strict deadline.

“I like to stay ahead of things. I cannot stand when things are chaotic and rushed,” he admitted. “I hate putting a date on something and then having to do it up to the date. I like organization and structure at work. Sometimes you can’t have that. It’s live music, it’s a music business. You gotta roll with the punches, and sometimes stuff happens like.”

It’s clear that Cody Johnson is taking his time to make sure that every decision, from artwork down to the theme, is being carefully considered before sharing too much information with his fans.

“I would say I’ve got a little bit of work for the rest of the year to get done with this record. I don’t want to talk a whole lot about it, because I’m still kind of playing with artwork and photography and the theme of this thing. I don’t want to ever do the same thing twice.”

He added, “I would say next year be expecting something.”

This news followed the recent celebration for Cody Johnson and Carrie Underwood’s No. 1 hit, “I’m Gonna Love You,” which appears on Leather Deluxe. The 13 additional tracks that make up this collection also includes his hit, “The Fall” as well as “How Do You Sleep At Night,” “C’mon Cowgirl,” “Take It Like A Man,” and more.

A full list of upcoming shows, including dates with Bailey Zimmerman and Jelly Roll across the U.S., Australia, the UK, Netherlands and Germany can be found on his official website.
