Cody Johnson Puts His Love Story On Display Through Cinematic Music Video For ‘The Painter’
Johnson’s wife, Brandi, makes an appearance in the clip.
Cody Johnson – The Painter Music Video
Cody Johnson ushers in a wave of love with the music video for his current Top 10 hit, “The Painter.”
Premiering today (Jan. 19), the platinum-selling country artist takes viewers into the serenity of his own Texas ranch for the Dustin Haney-directed film. The opening of the video takes place in a traditional honky tonk where a medley of Johnson’s fan-favorite hits take over the dance floor. As viewers see a couple forming a lifelong connection under the neon lights, the video welcomes a string of black and white performance clips that find Johnson delivering “The Painter” on the stunning landscape of his Texas ranch.
The story continues with highlights of the couple’s love story that reflects Johnson’s journey with his wife of 15 years, Brandi, and suddenly with every step they take, color starts to slowly take over the black and white. Towards the end, Brandi makes an appearance, joining her other half in a tight embrace as he delivers the final chorus.

A Powerful Love Song
Co-written by Benjy Davis, Kat Higgins, and Ryan Larkins and produced by Trent Willmon, “The Painter” served as the debut single off Johnson’s latest 12-track studio album, Leather. Although Johnson didn’t have a hand in writing the tender tune, he was able to easily relate to the message, which pays tribute that special person who never fails to be that brightness in challenging times. As he reveals in the video, that person is his wife, Brandi, who has been by his side since his days of professional bull riding, before music became the forefront of his days and has continued to encourage him throughout his star-powered journey.
“My favorite lyric in ‘The Painter’ is ‘for every wall I built, she saw a canvas.’ If there’s anything that describes my marriage with my wife, Brandi, it’s that line,” Johnson shared via press release. “And that’s why we’ve been together for 15 years.”
“I don’t remember / life before she came into the picture / Brought the beauty I was missin’ with her / Showed me colors I ain’t ever seen / She took chances / With every wall I built she saw a canvas / I thank god every day for how he made her / My life was black and white but she’s the painter,” Johnson sings in the full chorus.
Deluxe Album Coming Summer 2024
Released in November 2023, Leather features seven brand new tracks as well as several advanced releases turned fan favorites such as “Work Boots,” “Watching My Old Flame” and “That’s Texas.” Within the track list is also two collaborative tunes – “Whiskey Bent” feat. Jelly Roll and “Long Live Country Music” feat. Brooks & Dunn.
Johnson previously told Country Now that this collection is just an “appetizer” for what he’s cooking up next. He went on to reveal that a deluxe edition of Leather is in the works and will include 12 additional songs, making for a total of 24 tracks. He predicts that the remainder of the songs will drop around the summertime.
“It’ll be sooner than later. I won’t make you wait until next November, I don’t think,” he promised.
This will serve as Johnson’s second consecutive double album, following his October 2021 project, Human, which featured a total of 18 tracks including the chart-topping hit “‘Til You Can’t” and his fan-favorite, “Human.”
