Music legend, Dolly Parton just announced her new book, Behind the Seams: My Life in Rhinestones, which is due to hit shelves on October 17, 2023.
In the book, Parton shares for the first time, the full story behind her decades-long passion for fashion and how she developed her distinct Dolly style that has defined her to fans around the world by her rhinestone dresses and denim with diamonds. Parton’s fashion sense is not only revered by fans but also said to be “one of fashion’s greatest and most unlikely muses” by Vogue Magazine.
Behind the Seams: My Life in Rhinestones was written by Parton with award-winning author Holly George-Warren and curated by the director of archive services for Dolly Parton, Rebecca Seaver.
When discussing the book Parton shared, “I am happy, proud, and excited to present my book Behind the Seams to the public. It is my hope that you will enjoy a look at my life in costume and hair and get to know some of the great people who have helped shape my life and my look. Enjoy!”
The glamorous book will feature new, behind-the-scenes stories from Dolly Parton’s life and career, along with the largest reveal of her extensive private costume archive. This project highlights her most iconic looks from the 1960s to now, including everything from the sky-high heels, to famous wigs, bold makeup, and all the eye-catching stage clothes.
Parton also discusses memorable outfits from her life before she was the legend she is now. She details the clothes her mother would sew out of feed sacks (including her “Coat of Many Colors”), the bold dresses and hairdos that influenced generations, evening wear at Studio 54, costumes from her most famous film and TV roles like 9 to 5 and Steel Magnolias, and even the legendary bunny suit from the cover of Playboy.
The collection is an honest, funny, sparkly look behind the icon we know and love. Behind the Seams: My Life in Rhinestones is the second book in a trilogy that began with 2020’s bestselling Songteller: My Life in Lyrics—the shining tribute to one of the most widely beloved musicians in history and a must have keepsake for anyone who loves Dolly Parton or music in general.
Imagination Library
Throughout her career, the “9 To 5” singer has been nothing but transparent about her love for books and the importance of reading. To date, Parton has donated more than 200 million books to children around the world with her Imagination Library, which offers free books to children five years old or younger.
The first few books were distributed in 1995 to kids in Sevier County, TN, which is known as the town Dolly grew up in. By 2003, one million books had been mailed out to children and not long after, the program went international. It extended beyond the U.S. to branches in Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and The Republic of Ireland.
Hosting the ACM Awards
As an entrepreneur, Parton keeps herself busy with programs like her Imagination Library, writing her own books, and recording new music. In between all that, she also takes part in a variety of hosting duties. On Thursday, May 11, the country music icon will team up with Garth Brooks to co-host the 58th Academy of Country Music Awards.
