Live at Detroit’s Ford Field on Saturday (Feb. 22), more than 74,000 fans knew who Garth Brooks was referring to when he rocked a No. 20 jersey with the last name “Sanders.”

They even started chanting “Barry,” because Brooks was paying tribute to the famous Detroit Lions running back, Barry Sanders.

However, in the days after Brooks posted a picture wearing the name Sanders on his back, followers confused the wardrobe choice with an endorsement for the presidential candidate, Bernie Sanders. The backlash was rampant with one follower commenting, “If this is for Bernie Sanders, I’m done with you. I thought you were a true American that loves Our Country?”

Another posted, “Nothing like supporting a communist to [lose] a few fans! How about going to a successful socialist country and doing some research? Oh yes, you can’t because there aren’t ANY successful socialist countries!”

Others into NFL history caught Brooks’ reference. One person shared, “I’m just here to read all the comments of people unaware of who Barry Sanders is.”

Now that the post has spiraled into a hilarious social media moment gone wild, Barry and Garth are getting in on the fun.

Brooks‘ stadium tour continues May 2 at Charlotte, NC’s Bank of America Stadium.
