HARDY and Lainey Wilson’s “wait in the truck” is officially No.1 at country radio.
The song claimed the top spot on the Mediabase Country Airplay Chart, securing HARDY’s third No.1 as an artist and Wilson’s fourth (according to country radio insider Chris Owen).
Co-written by HARDY with Hunter Phelps, Jordan Schmidt, and Renee Blair, “wait in the truck” was an instant hit upon its debut in August of last year. It also became the most-added song at country radio with 57 first-week stations when it officially went for adds.
A Career-Changing Hit
The ominous story song tells the story of a woman who has experienced ongoing domestic abuse. The woman is ultimately saved by a stranger who takes matters into his own hands when he confronts the abusive man and shoots him to death.
With her newfound freedom, the woman ultimately feels torn between feeling relieved and guilty over her abuser’s death.
“I don’t know if he’s an angel / Cause angels don’t do what he did / He was hell-bent to find the man behind / All the whiskey scars I hid / I never thought my day of justice / Would come from a judge under his seat / But I knew right then I’d never get hit again when he said to me / Wait in the truck / Just wait in the truck,” Wilson sings, full of emotion.
Cinematic Music Video
HARDY and Wilson shared a cinematic music video coinciding with the release of the murder ballad. The Justin Clough-directed clip plays out like a movie and follows each line of the song perfectly, bringing the dark storyline to life.
“Wait In The Truck” was produced by Joey Moi and co-produced by HARDY, Derek Wells and Jordan Schmidt. The tune appears on HARDY’s chart-topping album, the mockingbird & THE CROW. HARDY said it’s one of his favorite songs in his catalog.
“’Wait In the Truck,’ my next single, is one of my favorite songs I’ve ever written – probably the best song I’ve ever written to be honest,” HARDY shared when the song was released. “It hit me so hard the first time I heard the demo back, and no other song had done that before. Very excited for the world to hear the song, excited for the song to give people a platform to maybe speak out about stuff that might be going on in their own homes. Thank you to Lainey Wilson for doing this song with me – she crushed it, she crushed the music video, I just can’t wait for the world to see this and I can’t wait to play it live.”
“I always love working with HARDY, but this track is extra special,” Wilson added. “I am so proud to be part of ‘wait in the truck’ because it’s such a powerful song and story, and I really do think it will change lives.”
Major Television Performances
HARDY and Wilson joined forces to perform the song during the 56th Annual CMA Awards last fall, and on NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, in January.
Earlier this month, the music video claimed the title of Collaborative Video of the Year at the 2023 CMT Music Awards.
Additionally, HARDY and Lainey Wilson are among the most-nominated artists at the upcoming 58th Academy Of Country Music Awards.
HARDY leads with seven nominations, including Song of the Year and Artist-Songwriter of the Year, while Wilson earned six nods, including Female Artist of the Year.
“wait in the truck” also earned three nominations, including Visual Media Of The Year, Song Of The Year, and Music Event Of The Year.
The Mississippi native is currently in the midst of the One Night At A Time World Tour, where he serves as direct support for Morgan Wallen. He is also headlining his own shows on his sold-out the mockingbird & THE CROW Tour.
Lainey Wilson is spending her spring/summer touring with Luke Combs on his 2023 stadium tour.
