Kane Brown’s new song “Backseat Driver” pays tribute to his life as a father of three while offering a powerful reminder to listeners to cherish the little things in life before they become nothing more than memories.

The heartfelt tune penned by Jacob Davis and Jordan Walker finds Brown reflecting on a mundane moment in fatherhood and then turning it into a valuable lesson. He paints a clear picture of his perspective from his spot in the driver’s seat and his little girl in the backseat. As he drives around, paying no special attention to the things we see every day in life, his daughter clues into the same things with great curiosity.

Many of these innocent questions that a child would typically ask are displayed across the chorus as Kane Brown sings, “A ‘Daddy look, there’s a plane in the sky/ Are we there yet/ Did you just see that dog run by/ Do squirrels have houses in the trees/ Why’d God put stingers on honeybees/ It’s crazy all the things she sees on the side of the road/ Out of that window beside her/ I wish I could be more like her/ My little dangling feet, pretty in pink, backseat driver.”

A Relatable Narrative For Parents Everywhere

Despite being an outside cut, this is a song that Kane Brown – and most parents – can likely relate to, because it captures the inevitable phase of curiosity that inevitably comes while raising a child. Towards the end of the narrative Brown realizes just how much he will miss being bombarded by such simple questions from the little one in the back.

“One day, I’ll look back and I’ll miss when/ My whole world wasn’t over that dash/ It was back there buckled in,” he sings.

For weeks, fans have been asking the Tennessee native to finally drop the full song amid his many teasers across social media and now that it’s out, we get to hear just how much love and tenderness he is able to pour out with each note strung together by the calming melody. The release was also paired with a music video that captures just as much heart as these lyrics.

A fuzzy, black and white TV screen is shown in the opening clip, highlighting valuable memories being made with Brown and his family. The country star then appears in a small studio out in the desert where he records the new track before hopping in his vintage car and cursing to a campsite in the middle of nowhere.

Kane Brown recently enjoyed a beach getaway with his wife and three kids after wrapping up his headlining In The Air Tour. The trek, which marked his biggest run to date, came to a close with his final show at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas on September 14.
