Keith Urban can’t get enough of Taylor Swift’s “Lover. So much so that he covered the song during his performance at the Washington State Fair on Saturday (Aug. 31).
The reigning ACM and CMA Entertainer of the Year took to social media to share a short clip of his cover of “Lover,” the title track of Swift’s latest album.
“Every now and then you hear a song that you love and wish you’d written,” he wrote, adding, “and a HUGE thx to my band as well- we didn’t get to rehearse so…. this is us fully winging it.”
After Urban shared the video across his social channels, Swift responded by first sharing the video to her Instagram Stories with the caption, “KEITH URBAN COVERING LOVER FLAWYLESSLY I AM SCREAMING.” She also wrote “this is so beautiful” and tagged Urban.
She then responded on Twitter with an emoji-filled Tweet. “MY HEART EXPLODED INTO CONFETTI HEARTS THANK YOU,” she gushed, adding in prayer hands, hearts and a crying face.
This isn’t the first time Urban has shared his appreciation for “Lover.” When the track was first released in August, Urban immediately took to Twitter to praise Swift over the song.
“Huge shoutout today to @taylorswift13 on the SUPERB new single LOVER,” he wrote. “When a song so exquisitely written becomes a record so gorgeously crafted I feel such a deep sense of gratitude for the “art” of making music.”
Swift responded almost immediately, writing, “ARE YOU KIDDING ME THIS IS THE NICEST THING ANYONE HAS EVER SAID – you’re just the best and so kind to say this.”
Urban and Swift have a long history together. Before breaking into the pop world, Swift spent time on the road opening for Urban on his Escape Together World Tour 2009. In 2013, they joined forces on the song “Highway Don’t Care” with Tim McGraw. The track was celebrated with multiple awards, including Musical Event of the Year at the 2013 CMA Awards.
