On Wednesday (Aug. 4), it was announced that Tim McGraw and Faith Hill were cast alongside Sam Elliott in the much-anticipated Yellowstone prequel, 1883.
According to a press release, “1883 follows the Dutton family as they embark on a journey west through the Great Plains toward the last bastion of untamed America. It is a stark retelling of Western expansion, and an intense study of one family fleeing poverty to seek a better future in America’s promised land — Montana.”
Naturally, McGraw and Hill will play a couple: James and Margaret Dutton, the patriarch and matriarch of the Dutton family. Elliott will portray the role of Shea Brennan, a tough as nails, handsome cowboy with immense sadness in his past.

After the news was announced, McGraw took to social media to share his excitement over playing the role of James Dutton.
“A lot of you probably have heard by now that we’re on to a new project and we’re pretty excited about it,” the superstar said. “Faith and I get to star alongside Sam Elliott I mean goodness gracious for the new Yellowstone prequel called 1883. It’s going to be a fantastic family saga about the original Duttons and their journey to Montana and how they founded the ranch up there.”
McGraw went on to comment on working with writer Taylor Sheridan and addressed fans’ questions about his new beard.
“A lot of you asked about my beard, so now you know why,” he said with a smile.
McGraw’s post drew in thousands of comments, including a response from the one and only Kevin Costner, who stars in Yellowstone as John Dutton.
“Dutton looks good on you,” Costner wrote from his band’s Instagram account.
McGraw replied moments later writing, “Thanx… Great grandson!!! Means a lot from you.”
