Colin Stough returns with “Makes Two of Us,” a song that details the complex feelings of past lovers contemplating a reunion.

Stough Is A Co-Writer On The Song

Written by Stough with Alex Maxwell and Cole Taylor and produced by Alex Maxwell, the radio-ready tune opens with Stough questioning “Are you lonely tonight? Got some things on your mind?”

He goes on to ask. “Are you missing what you say you didn’t want back? Are you wishing I was sitting where you’re at?”

In the chorus, the rising star admits that he is feeling the same way, but acknowledges that rekindling their relationship, even for one more night, may not be the best decision.

“Baby, that makes two of us/ Going crazy, thinking maybe we could come back/ I know you said it was through with us/ But right now, it don’t sound that bad/ For you to open the door, turn down the lights/ Yeah, we’ve done it before, what’s one more time?/ If you’re wantin’ a mistake, one more heartbreak/ Baby, then that makes two of us,” the Mississippi native sings.

This storyline is one many listeners can easily relate to as touches on love, longing and the urge to give in to give in to late night temptation.

What Is The Song About?

“‘Makes Two of Us’ is about that after a breakup thing where you keep thinking about your ex. It’s those lonely moments when your brain kicks in and you start thinking about them, then you start debating on whether or not you should reach out just in case they’re thinking of you too,” Stough explains. “You find yourself wondering if they’re thinking of doing the same, even though you know that reaching out never gets you anywhere and is pretty much a horrible idea.”

Sonically, “Makes Two of Us” feels a bit more polished than Stough’s previous releases. While it still incorporates his rock and country influences, “Makes To of Us” is much more radio-friendly and could quite possibly be his breakout radio hit.

The release of “Makes To of Us” follows on the heels of Colin Stough’s debut EP Promiseland, which was released last fall. This project included six tracks and showcased the 19-year-old’s signature gritty vocals and country/rock stylings. He co-wrote five of the six songs and during a recent chat with Country Now, the singer/songwriter shared his hopes for the project.

“There are some songs on there that have deeper meaning and stuff like that and really I just want my listeners to take a message from my music and kind of live with it. Something to kind of get them through their day or make them smile, that’s the only reason I do this stuff is because music helped me out in my dark times. So I just want to return the favor,” he explained.

With more new music on the horizon, the American Idol alum has several dates on the books, with shows planned at festivals and fairs around the Southeast and Midwest.
