Michael Ray’s much-anticipated new single, “Get Her Back,’ from his upcoming six-track Dive Bars & Broken Hearts EP, is out now.
“Get Her Back” is more than just what the title suggests as it details the aftermath of a breakup and the array of emotions one experiences after closing the door on a relationship. At first listen, fans might think he’s sharing his hopes to win his ex back over after a fallout, however, that’s not the case. As the song continues, it becomes clear that the lyrics are referring to revenge as he shares the things he’d like to do in an effort to “Get Her Back” for the things she did to him.

“She got me out of my brain/ Would’ve done anything just to get her back/ Now, I just wanna get her back/ For everything that she did behind closed doors/ All the lies and the signs that I ignored/ ‘Cause I swore that I loved her, but now that it’s over/ I just wanna get her back/ Send a text, show her who her friends are/ Cut deep, get even with a broken heart/ Lucky for her, I wasn’t raised like that/ But damn, I wanna get her back,” he sings on the chorus.
He Connected To The Song Immediately
Ray says he was immediately drawn to the lyrics of “Get Her Back” and knew he had to record it. With award-winning producer Michael Knox at the helm, the Florida native created what has the potential to be his most successful release yet.
“I was raised on country songs that turn what you think on its head,” Ray explains. “You think you know what the song’s all about, then you hear the hook – and it’s something completely else. That’s what the greats like [Merle] Haggard, [Johnny] Cash or Conway [Twitty were all about. So, when I heard this, the way it flipped the script twice, I knew I had to cut ‘Get Her Back.’ The way it’s written is so tight, and then what Michael Knox did in the studio? The track is so sexy, he really intensifies that sense of what’s going on here…”
The country hitmaker hopes that listeners will be able to connect to the song in ways like he did.
“Nobody wants to talk about all the emotions you feel, shock, anger, wanting to know why, or even wanting something bad to happen… because then there’s the letting go,” Ray shares. “It’s so many different things, all falling together really fast. But in the end, why bother? Like the song says, ‘I wasn’t raised like that…’
“I think ‘Get Her Back’ speaks for a lot of people who don’t wanna talk about it, you know? Most of us have all these emotions, feel all kinds of things – and we’re expected to act like we’re good or everything’s fine. You hear people talk, but if you respected whatever it was you had, feel it, but don’t feed the fire. That’s what’s at the heart of this song. For anyone out there like me, know we see you. It’s cool. But know you did the right thing…”
Watch The Music Video
Coinciding with the release of “Get Her Back,” Michael Ray teamed up with Spidey Smith to bring the track to life with a cinematic music video. The clip opens with what appears to be a crime scene and features Ray being questioned by authorities about what is presumed to be the death of his ex. The video goes on to show flashbacks of the couple during the happier times and the fallout that eventually ensues between them.
As the clip comes to a close, the woman sips on red wine and then frantically calls her ex as she screams into the phone. Ray doesn’t answer her calls as he is preoccupied by loading firewood onto a truck. The woman then appears to stumble and fall into a pool. Ray’s return phone call goes unanswered.
“Leave it to Spidey to find the edge and the mystery,” Ray laughs. “He understands that place where you want to snap, but then you settle down and you just move on. To be able to find a way of showing how far you can stand from the fire – and still get burned, how you can do the right thing, which sometimes is nothing, and just keep moving? It’s a tough line to walk, but he did. And for everyone who’s ever been in a position of not wanting to look back, well, this clip’s for you.”
