On Tuesday evening (Oct. 22), Old Dominion was honored with the presentation of the Angels Among Us Award, commemorating the group’s longtime commitment to the life-saving mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
The CMA and ACM Award-winning group was honored with the award on the final day of the 35th Annual Country Cares Seminar during the Angels Among Us dinner.
Old Dominion, composed of Matthew Ramsey, Trevor Rosen, Whit Sellers, Geoff Sprung, and Brad Tursi, admitted that they felt drawn to support St. Jude from their first visit to the campus early in their career. From that point on, OD was committed to supporting St. Jude’s lifesaving mission.
“Our first tour of the hospital really moved us all and it just seemed like it gave us a real perspective on why we do what we do. And it’s a really easy thing to do when you’re in our position where you get to do what you love to do and then someone asks for help. It’s a blessing to us to be a part of it,” Ramsey shared with Country Now and other reporters on their big night.
After accepting the honor from Alabama’s Randy Owen, the founder of Country Cares, Ramsey further elaborated on what the award means to the group.
“I’ll just say one more thing as humbly as I possibly can, we are a band that has won many awards, CMA awards and ACM awards and songwriter awards, and we have a Waffle House award…This means more than any of them because it’s not about us,” he said from the stage. “It’s just a beautiful thing for us to be a part of for a couple of reasons. One is that we can, in this profession, when you’re a kid dreaming of it all the way up until now, you question sometimes why you’re doing this. And the people involved with St. Jude and the families and the patients show us that by following our dreams, we can make a difference in people’s lives. And that is a huge, huge, huge deal for us. So thank you for showing us that we have a purpose.”
Old Dominion’s dedication to St. Jude started in 2016 when they attended their first annual Country Cares Seminar after signing with RCA Records Nashville. Since then, the band has remained actively involved in a variety of St. Jude events, participating in seven #ThisShirtSavesLives campaigns, performing at the Bobby Bones Million Dollar Show, contributing their music to fundraising efforts, and performing at numerous benefit events.
The group joins previous Angels Among Us Award recipients including Randy Owen, Brothers Osborne, Scotty McCreery, Florida Georgia Line, Lady A, Jake Owen, Brad Paisley, and Darius Rucker.
St. Jude is leading the way the world understands, treats, and defeats childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases. Families NEVER receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing, or food.
