Scotty McCreery’s whole world changed when he and his wife Gabi welcomed their first son Merrick Avery McCreery into the world on October 24, 2022. In fact, it impacted him so much that he started writing his first true dad song the night Avery was born. From the time they left for the hospital to their room number and even the moment the nurse said, “do you wanna hold him?” McCreery captured it all in the track “Love Like This” off his fifth studio album, Rise & Fall.
In a recent interview with Music Mayhem, the North Carolina native opened up about his reputation for writing songs that are a direct reflection of his real life and revealed that it was only natural for fatherhood to become his newest form of inspiration.

“I’ve always been an open book about my life and my family and my faith, my friends, everything. I’m happy to just talk about life and I think writing for me, I’ve always written from the heart. I’ve always said, for me, it’s easier to write a song if I’ve lived it, if I know it, if I believe it in. Fatherhood, it’s like that’s the biggest thing that’s ever happened to me in my life. So how could you not write songs?” he shared. “Just sitting there looking at him and Gabi was like, man, I’ve known love but not like this. So I was taking pictures of the room number he was in so I could put it in the song and all sorts of stuff.”
Now that Avery is getting a bit older and becoming more in tune with his surroundings, McCreery admits that he “loves daddy’s music” and particularly favors songs like “Cab In A Solo” and “Fall of Summer.” He also noted that the almost 2-year-old is even able to pick out his voice when it comes on the radio.
“If he sees me singing, he’ll immediately say ‘dadda’ or when he hears me on the radio, he’ll say, ‘dadda.’ It’s amazing…if we have a two hour drive to the beach, we’ll just have the radio on and if one of my songs happens to come on, he’ll just immediately say, ‘daddy.’ It’s wild he just can know my voice through the radio like that,” the singer shared proudly.
Do He And Gabi Plan To Have More Kids?
When it comes to adding more kids to their family, McCreery says that it could be in their future but that they are in no hurry as they have been staying plenty busy trying to navigate life with one child while balancing a booming music career.
“Well, Lord willing down the road, but we are in no rush right now. We got our hands full,” he joked.
One thing is for sure, whether he and Gabi welcome more kids or Avery remains their only, McCreery’s priorities now lie more heavily with his family than ever before. He is looking forward to continuing his journey with fatherhood and helping his son grow up to be a “nice, respectful, God-fearing young man.”
This week, fans can catch Scotty McCreery singing his fair share of heartfelt anthems and dad songs in Milwaukee, WI on July 25 and Helena, MT on July 26.
