American Idol production came to a halt when Katy Perry fell out of her chair on Sunday evening (May 1) during Disney Week on Idol.
Perry went all-out for Disney week, sporting an Ariel costume from The Little Mermaid. Her look was complete with a red wig, purple shell bra, and a green tail. The pop superstar even accessorized with a “dinglehopper” (aka fork) to complete the costume.
Due to her mermaid tail, Perry was unable to walk on her own and had to seek help from fellow Idol judges Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie, who chivalrously carried her to her seat on the judges panel.
While host Ryan Seacrest was introducing the show, a sudden thump and gasps were heard as Perry flipped backwards out of her white rolling chair at the judges panel. Luke Bryan hysterically laughed at Perry when he seen her lying on the floor.
Bryan, Richie, Idol producers and Seacrest then went rushing to help Perry up off the ground.
“She’s alright, she’s alright,” Seacrest shouted.
“Hell with Mermaids,” Bryan yelled after helping her up, before Richie chimed in, “live TV, I love it!”
The comical moment had the entire live audience cracking up before they chanted her name as she successfully returned to her seat.
This isn’t the first incident that Perry endured during the 20th season of American Idol.
Earlier this year, during the first round of Hollywood Week, Perry suffered a wardrobe malfunction.
In the midst of the show, Perry split her pants during an impromptu performance of her chart-topping hit, “Teenage Dream.” The incident occurred when Perry, Richie and Bryan, as well as Idol hopefuls, were singing along to the hit song.
During the random sing-along, Perry was singing the lyrics, “let you put your hands on me in my skin-tight jeans,” when she bent down and ripped the back of her skin-tight red leather pants.
“They busted!” Bryan then shouted, referencing Perry’s pants, which split.
“That was a first ladies and gentlemen, the concert is officially over,” Richie said jokingly, while Bryan pointed at Perry laughing. “”I’m so sorry, all video will be collected.”
“Can I get some tape? Some gaffer’s tape?” Perry asked, as she walked off the stage to try and get some tape to repair the rip in her leather pants.
Bryan and Idol producers then assisted Perry in correcting the wardrobe malfunction with yellow duct tape.
In 2018, Perry encountered another mishap during Idol, when the hitmaker was faced with a similar situation alongside Richie and Bryan. The “Daisies” singer laughed so hard that her silver bodysuit ripped at the seams. Luckily, Richie helped cover her up when she repaired the split.
American Idol airs every Sunday and Monday at 8/7c on ABC.
