Brittany Aldean is opening up a deeply personal chapter of her life. The wife of country superstar Jason Aldean recently shared a vulnerable and emotional message about her father’s battle with dementia, pairing her experience through photos and home videos with one of her husband’s latest songs, “Help You Remember.”

Penned by Jason Aldean, Kurt Allison, Tully Kennedy, John Morgan and Lydia Vaughan, the powerful new tune carries an important message about navigating the ups and downs of watching someone you love battle dementia. The lyrics paint a touching picture of someone trying to hold onto a loved one who’s slowly slipping away right before their eyes. Even though their memory may be fading, the song treasures the good moments and touches on the challenge of trying to recreate moments of the past in an effort to regain some memory

Even though the person’s memory may be fading, the song reminds you to cherish the good times as Aldean reflects on the struggle of trying to relive the past in hopes of bringing those memories back.

“Would it help you remember?/ Would it all come back to you again?/ If we got in that truck right now/ And drove out to watch that made you smile sunset/ The heart knows what’s hiding/ Even when the mind can’t find it/ Even if you don’t, I still ain’t gonna stop tryin’, yeah/ To help you remember/ What I’ll never forget,” he sings with a new kind of vulnerability in his tone.

As Brittany revealed in her recent post, this song hits very close to her as it reminds her of her father’s ongoing battle with dementia. The video documents her relationship with her dad through photos and videos from her childhood, leading up to the present day, where the love clearly still flows between him and their entire family despite the hardship of the disease. While it was vulnerable and gives a rare look into her personal life, she admitted her and her dad decided it was the right thing to share with the world.

“I’ve talked to my dad about this video and sharing this story, and he is the sweetest man, and he’s like, ‘if it helps one person, then it was just totally worth it.’ So it’s something I was never going to speak on, but I just hope that if you’re out there going through something similar, you’re not alone,” she shared.

She also posted a round of Instagram stories that further explored the details of this difficult chapter and explained that it’s something both she and her husband have dealt with in their lives.

“This has been a day that I’ve been excited about, but also a little bit dreading just because when we put things out on social media, it seems like we tell so much of what’s going on in life. But in actuality, we’re very private people and you guys don’t know a lot of stuff that goes on personally. And this is the time that I have started to share my dad’s dementia journey through the reel that I just posted,” she began.

While attempting to hold back tears, Brittany recalled seeing signs of her father’s dementia in 2020 and two years later he received his official diagnosis of Lewy body dementia, which she claims to be “a very horrible form.” Just before her family learned that news, the “Try That In A Small Town” singer unfortunately lost his own uncle to the same type of dementia.

Aldean briefly opened up about his experience while reflecting on the mature themes on his upcoming record and specifically, “Help You Remember” during a recent interview on Armchair Expert With Dax Shepard.

“We’re writing songs about…family members going through things like dementia, those kinds of things,” Aldean reflected. “My mother’s brother, my uncle, passed away with Lewy body dementia in the last year, and [we’ve] got another family member that’s dealing with that kind of thing. So we’ve got some songs we wrote, talking about that,” he said at the time.

So when Aldean and his crew of songwriters brought “Help You Remember” to life, it hit close to home for the both of them. Now, they are using this opportunity to spread awareness on the disease and to help others going through something similar to know that they aren’t alone.

“It is true what they say about dementia, which is it’s the long goodbye because just cognitively your loved one declines,” Brittany continued. “And it just seems like such a slow process, but it’s quick too, and you’re just slowly losing your person and it’s just mourning the loss of someone who’s still alive. So it’s been a really hard thing to go through.”

Brittany ended her message with the reminder that “you never know what people are going through. Even though it may seem so amazing in life, there’s a lot of things behind the scenes that people could be going through. So just have grace, I guess, and any prayers for my sweet daddy would be so appreciated.”

“Help You Remember” also highlights the work of the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America. At the very end of Brittany’s video, the clips fade to darkness leaving only text on the screen that reads, “Don’t go on this journey alone. Connect with help and hope.”

This was followed by a link to join Jason Aldean in supporting the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) and their mission to “provide support, services and education to individuals, families and caregivers affected by Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias nationwide, and to fund research for better treatment and a cure.”
