If you’re a fan of Carly Pearce, you probably already know that her love for her dogs, Johnny and June, runs deep. So when she found herself in a relationship with someone who not only didn’t like her dogs but was downright unkind to them, Pearce knew there was only one way to handle it: write a song about it.

The result is “He Don’t Like My Dogs,” one of the more clever and downright hilarious songs on her upcoming album, Honest Woman.

In just a few days, Pearce will release her fifth studio album, a deeply personal collection that reflects the highs and lows she has experienced in recent years. Throughout the process, she found herself rediscovering who she is as both a woman and an artist while falling in love with country music all over again.

During a Nashville preview of the album on Tuesday attended by members of the music industry, media, friends and family, Pearce shared the story behind “He Don’t Like My Dogs,” and revealed that she hopes the ex who inspired it recognizes himself immediately.

“I was in a relationship where somebody was not nice to Johnny and that was it. Johnny and I talked. We kicked him out of the family,” she said with a laugh before adding, “And my favorite thing about this is he will know exactly that this song is about him when he hears it.”

The GRAMMY winner couldn’t resist one final jab, joking, “And that is a Carly Pearce code, if I’ve ever heard one!”

Fans will have to wait until Aug. 28 to hear the track for themselves, but after getting an early listen, we can confirm this one is worth the wait.

Of the project as a whole, the Kentucky native didn’t hesitate when asked how she feels about the music she created, admitting, “This is my favorite music that I’ve ever made.”

Fans have already gotten an early taste of what’s to come through songs including “Dream Come True,” “Church Girl,” “You Can Have Him,” “Happy For Myself,” and her current chart-climbing single, “If I Don’t Leave I’m Gonna Stay,” featuring Riley Green.

Pearce describes the 16-track collection as a “return” to her “roots,” allowing her to showcase different sides of her artistry while reconnecting with the reason she fell in love with making music in the first place.

“It’s showing the bluegrass side of me, the part of me in Kentucky that made me want to do this for a living,” she explained. “And I think being in this town for 17 years, my first single came out 10 years ago, which is crazy. I think all of the highs and the lows made me just kind of have to go back and find my why, if I’m honest. And I found it, and I found her again, and I found that little girl and the fire that she had to do this and chase this.”

In celebration of Honest Woman, Pearce will embark on the “HONEST WOMAN: UP CLOSE” Tour, performing special two-night residencies across North America.
