Chris Lane will pull at your heartstrings like never before with his brand-new single, “If I Die Before You.”

The title itself hints at the powerful sentiment that lives within this tune, but the lyrics that are presented through Lane’s rich vocals tell a much bigger story. Seth Mosley (who also produced), James McNair and Emily Weisband are responsible for penning the narrative that finds Lane illustrating the thoughts that run through someone’s mind when they think about the possibility of passing away before their partner.

“It was one of those songs that I accidentally heard through a link with a bunch of other songs on it…it’s such a sweet song, but also sad to think about,” he admitted to Country Now. “Most songs don’t do this, but it definitely pulled on my heartstrings in a big way and I thought to myself, ‘man, this sounds like a song that that speaks to me. I would love to potentially record it.’ I feel like it’s going to be one of those songs that I wish I had written 10 years from now. The writers did an incredible job. It just pulled on my heartstrings, not many songs that have done that for me so that’s why I was first initially drawn to it.”

Between Emily Weisband on background vocals and the tune’s delicate melody that further elevates the powerful message, Lane knew it was meant to be his. He was instantly drawn to the emotions portrayed and jumped on the chance to cut it. Unfortunately, he was informed another artist had it on hold. He stayed hopeful for a year and a half before learning that it would finally be his.

A Hard But Necessary Discussion

The discussion of what happens in the event that such an unexpected tragedy occurs is something that has been brought up many times between Lane and his wife Lauren, especially now that they are parents to two boys – Baker and Dutton. Because of their many difficult conversations, he was able to draw from his own raw emotions while singing his heart out.

“We don’t have to talk too much about it/ Just let me say it then I’ll stop/ Our best years ahead of us, don’t doubt it/ But all our names end up on a rock/ So if God takes me first cause we don’t get to choose/ Baby forgive him and keep living/ If I die before you,” Lane delivers on the chorus.

“Lauren has said to me a million times, long before I had this song, ‘if something ever happens to me, make sure the boys know how much their mom loved them.’ And I’m like, ‘honey, please don’t say that. It’s a terrible thought to have. I don’t want to ever think about that.’ I feel like that’s why it draws such an emotional chord with me. And I’m hoping a lot of people will be able to relate to that because for me, I don’t want to experience life without her or my boys. That would just be awful. I don’t know how I could even go on. So yeah, it just it spoke to me in a big way even down to the first line of the song, ‘I hope you buy that mustang.’ It’s one of those things for Lauren, the only thing she wants in this life is a horse.”

Lane’s Wife, Lauren Reacts

“If I Die Before You” is nothing short of an amazing tune and thanks to Chris Lane, listeners will get to experience just how much meaning it holds. There’s a palpable feeling of love displayed through every word and with his honest vocals encouraging his wife to continue her life even if he’s not there to share it with, it’s nearly impossible to not shed a tear. Even Lauren understandably balled her eyes out after hearing it for the first time, according to Lane.

“She loved it from just the demo phase as well. She cried listening to that. She was like, ‘Oh my gosh, you have to record the song.’ And I was like, ‘well, I just got word that that’s not going to be able to happen.’ So then I was like, ‘man, I wish I never heard the song.’  I had a year and a half to think about it, but you know, I just prayed really hard that if it was meant to be, songs always find their way to the right person at the end of the day and I feel like this could be a career changing song for me.”

He continued, “I feel like a lot of people will just be able to relate to this song much like I did when I first heard it and then the same for Lauren, like I said, she bawled her eyes out. And then when she heard my version and then watched the video, she just sat there on the couch crying.”

Since this message hits so close to home for Lane, it was only fitting to have his family join him in the beautiful music video. Pure joy shines through the smiles on their faces as they enjoy the beauty of the farmland in front of them.

“My boys were just loving life. I feel like we’re gonna have to buy a farm now just because of how much they love that farm that they were at. Just seeing all the animals, the way they lit up, they were absolutely loving shooting the video. I was worried, you know, what if they’re not into this and acting up and we don’t get the shots we need, you know? But they were pumped to be out there. They were having a lot of fun.”

Next Project Set To Feature ‘A Little Bit Of Everything’

“If I Die Before You” was released just as Lane’s current single “Find Another Bar” is seeing success across the airwaves. It recently broke into Top 30 on country radio, marking the perfect kick off to a new musical chapter for the country star. Both of the new singles serve as a glimpse into what’s to come on Lane’s next project, which he revealed will feature “it’s a little bit of everything.”

“We’re getting close now. I’m kind of putting final touches on some of the songs…I’ve got a great mix of really uptempo songs and then some of those mids as well. But not every song’s a love song. Some lifestyle, just a little bit of anything and everything for anybody on it. So yeah, I don’t want to shy away from what’s given me success over the years. It will still be very much like that, but maybe a little more guitar-driven in some songs, much like “Find Another Bar’ is.”

He admitted that the process to make this album looked “a lot different” than his previous projects as he finally had the time to sit down and write a lot of the tracks that will appear on the collection, which is something he didn’t have the chance to do at the start of his career.

Early in my career, I was out touring so much, I didn’t get to spend as much time writing because it was always radio tour right into, I was on tour with Florida Georgia Line, then I was on tour with Rascal Flatts, and then I was on tour with Brad Paisley, just constantly out there,” he shared honestly. “So I’ve been spending so much time writing songs here at home, taking a little bit more time off the road since my boys are so young, but it’s given me a chance to write and I feel like I’ve been thriving in the writing room and getting songs that I’m so proud of. I think this is going to be the biggest project of my career and I think it’s the best songs of my career. So I’ve compiled quite a list and could not be happier about where I’m at now.”

Joining Rascal Flats Life Is A Highway Tour 2025

In addition to the project, Lane has been tapped to appear as an opener on Rascal Flatt’s just announced Life Is A Highway Tour. This moment has been a long time coming for the “Big, Big Plans” singer because he was originally set to appear on the band’s farewell trek back in 2020 that was ultimately canceled. The group then took a hiatus which each other the time to break off on their own individual adventures. Now that they are heading back on the road, they are bringing Lane and Lauren Alaina with them.

“I was originally set to be direct support for them in 2020 when COVID hit and that kind of killed that tour from starting, which was really sad. I was so upset about that, but I am so thankful that they asked me to be a part of their 25th anniversary. I grew up a massive Rascal Flatts fan. I toured with them back in ‘17 and had so much fun, got to know all those guys really well.  So it is going to be so much fun. I think there’s a lot of excitement around this tour. And again, I’m just incredibly grateful I got asked to be a part of it.”

The tour kicks off on February 13 in Evansville, IN and runs through April. For a full list of Chris Lane’s upcoming shows, click HERE.
