Cody Johnson reveals he and Luke Combs might be in the process of recording their first-ever duet together.

Back in February, the pair of artists caused some major buzz around Nashville when Combs made a surprise appearance during Johnson’s second of two sold-out nights at Bridgestone Arena. Their performance of Combs’ “Beer Never Broke My Heart” left fans wondering (and hoping) if an official collaboration is in the works.

Sitting down to discuss his forthcoming project with Audacy’s Katie Neal, the Texas native heavily hinted that he is working to bring something to life with Combs in the studio.

“I’m going in this year to go record a new album and there’s a certain song that I’m pretty certain…we’re kind of playing with it. We’re going back and forth. But I mean, it could be in the works. I can neither confirm nor deny,” he said with a smirk.

This next project will follow the release of Johnson’s Leather Deluxe Edition, which welcomed 13 new songs in addition to the 12 tracks from CMA’s Album of the Year nominated Leather, making for a total of 25 songs.

Johnson is celebrating this collection throughout his current Leather Deluxe Tour, which brought him to Music City on February 14 and 15. Each of the shows, the Texas native gave all his energy to the crowd and received some help from some of his fellow singer/songwriters. Night two was certainly one to remember, as it featured a star-studded lineup of guests, from Ian Munsick to Carrie Underwood and Luke Combs, who made his appearance during the encore.

While thinking back to the moment he asked Combs to be a part of the show, the “I’m Gonna Love You” singer fueled collaboration rumors even more, admitting he wished they had the song recorded and ready to debut that night in Nashville.

“I said, ‘man, you want to come out and do the encore with me?’ And this was weeks before the show. And he said, ‘yeah, what are we going to play?’ And I was like, ‘well, we should’ve record that freaking duet. We could have done that,’” he shared. “And we were going back and forth and then it just kind of hit me. I was like, ‘why don’t we just do one of your songs? Let’s just go burn it down with ‘Beer Never Broke My Heart.’ It’s a massive song and it’s fun. I promise you all my fans know it.’ So it was a huge no brainer.”

Before wrapping up the night, the “Dirt Cheap” singer proceeded to tease his final song by asking a team member to remove the cups from the stage as he noted, “we aren’t gonna need this for the next song either” because it’s “about beer.”

Much to the crowd’s delight, Combs took the stage alongside Johnson for a powerhouse performance of the hit tune. Staying true to his signature style, Combs amped up the moment by challenging Johnson to a shot-gunning challenge. Unsurprisingly, the North Carolina native crushed it with ease.

“Obviously, me and Luke wound up shot gunning beers at the end of the set. I didn’t know that was a thing until it happened,” Johnson joked before adding, “I’ve been on tour with him and I’ve seen it happen. I just didn’t think we were really going to do it. We joked about it and then I’m like, oh crap. He smoked me.”

Cody Johnson’s Leather Deluxe Tour launched in January and has already made its mark with a slew of sold-out shows across the U.S He recently added to the already extensive run by announcing two more stops in Mt. Pleasant, MI and Salt Lake City, UT this June.

On March 14, Johnson brought the tour over across the pond for several dates in the UK as well as Australia. He will return to the states to finish out the trek this August.
