Texas-born singer-songwriter and rising artist Jenna Paulette is carving her own path to success with her already independently released songs like “Wild Like the West,” “Coolest Girl in the World” and “F-150.”But that hasn’t stopped her from covering tunes by other artists who continue to influence her personal sound and musical style.
In this Country Now exclusive premiere, Paulette performs a rousing rendition of Cody Johnson’s love ballad “On My Way To You.” The single, written by Brett James and Tony Lane, appears on Johnson’s Ain’t Nothin’ to It album, as his first release in partnership with Warner Music Group.
In the brand new clip, Paulette flawlessly and effortlessly delivers her female version of the reflective Top 40 hit, which divulges the storyteller’s personal hardships, while on a journey to finding love. “Every curve, every ditch / Every turn, every bridge / I left behind me up in smoke / Every fork in the road / It was all worth the while / When I finally saw your smile,” Paulette sings with her angelic vocals and natural southern twang, while backed solely by acoustic guitar.
Paulette opened up about why she chose to put her own spin on the song saying, “I covered this song because I absolutely love it and I admire Cody so much. I love what he represents: his work ethic, the way he does family, the way he is what he sings about, he is down to earth and he just feels like my kind of people. When this song came out it hit me in the chest with its authenticity, so I had to do my own version.”
Paulette, a CMT Discovery Artist, has never tried to fit the mold of what others have suggested. Influenced by her upbringing, she defines her musical style as “New West,” which mixes traditional country pedal steel with modern sounds. Paulette is slated to release her anticipated EP, Modern Cowgirl: Vol. 1, in September. Fans can keep up with her by visiting jennapaulette.com.
