How Team Blake’s Wendy Moten Made ‘The Voice’ History

Throughout Season 21 of NBC’s The Voice, Team Blake [Shelton]’s Wendy Moten was a standout contestant who continually delivered show-stopping performances that left the superstar coaches – Shelton, Kelly Clarkson, Ariana Grande and John Legend – speechless. 

Each week, the former background singer, who has previously shared the stage with the likes of Faith Hill, Martina McBride and Vince Gill (just to name a few), wowed with her impressive vocals and powerful stage presence. Yet, when it came time to crown the winner of the season, Moten placed second behind Team Kelly’s Girl Named Tom.

Though she may not have won the singing competition, Moten did walk away from the show with a powerful fan base and a newfound confidence as a solo artist. 

In fact, during the blind auditions, Moten admitted taking the leap of faith to join The Voice was a bit terrifying. 

“I’ve toured with some of the greatest icons in music history. None of these icons ever scared me. But coming here? This is the biggest thing I’ve done,” she shared. 

During her time on the show, Moten covered artists such as The Beatles, Dolly Parton, Aretha Franklin and Whitney Houston. And even after suffering a scary fall in the midst of one of the live shows, Moten powered through, and at 57 years old, she went on to make history as the oldest contestant to make it this far in the competition. 

“You are a living testament to: ‘Just don’t give up on your dream. Keep going,’” Shelton said during an episode of The Voice, admitting, “I want this for Wendy. She’s never been in the spotlight, she’s always been backing up someone else. This is her moment. She’s one of the greatest vocalists on ‘The Voice,’ ever.”

On the finale, she joined force with coach Blake Shelton to perform “Just a Fool,” a duet that originally features Shelton and Christina Aguilera.

She may not have won, but Wendy Moten certainly left her mark and if Shelton’s prediction rings true, Moten will have offers pouring in after the show.
