Kelsea Ballerini and Morgan Evans’ love story began with a shot of tequila.
After co-hosting the 2016 CMC Music Awards in Evans’ native Australia, the pair celebrated together at the after-party.
“He was like, ‘Let’s take a shot,’” Ballerini recalled to People. “I remember taking that shot and putting it down and looking at him like, ‘Oh…he’s superhot.’ Later that night he leaned over and asked if he could kiss me, like a proper gentleman, and I said yes.”
Not long after their co-hosting gig, the singers were engaged.
“This morning, 9 months and 13 days later, he got down on one knee in the kitchen while I was burning pancakes and asked me to marry him,” she wrote on Instagram, following Evans’ Christmas day proposal. “Loving him has been the greatest gift of my life. And now I get to do it for life.”
After a whirlwind year, which included wedding planning and the release of Evans’ debut American single and Ballerini’s sophomore album, the couple tied the knot on the beach in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
They exchanged vows in front of 100 guests on December 2, 2017. After the ceremony, the newlyweds and their guests toasted with shots of tequila.
“It’s a little bit different,” she admitted, “but that’s how we started.”
Following the ceremony, the love birds and their guests enjoyed Mexican fare and margaritas. They danced, ate cake and capped off the night with a dip in the pool.
The couple said it was “a perfect end to a perfect night.”
Despite their busy touring schedules, Ballerini and Evans always make time to see each other. They even implemented a two-week rule into their marriage to make sure they don’t go too long without connecting.
“We have a 2 week rule,” Ballerini once shared on Instagram. “Sometimes we have to have a grace period for an extra day or two, like this time, but we try to never go without seeing each other for more than 2 weeks.”
Evans explained that they also look to their friends and fellow country stars for advice when it comes to balancing a career and marriage.
“Country music is great in that way in that it encourages family, it encourages marriage and all that stuff,” Morgan shared with E! Online. “We’re good friends with Thomas Rhett and Lauren. Obviously we look up to people like Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill. There’s so many great family stories in country music.”
