Morgan Wallen pays tribute to his mom, Lesli, with the release of a heartfelt new song, “Thought You Should Know.”
The emotional tune, released just days before Mother’s Day, was co-written by Wallen alongside Miranda Lambert and Nicolle Galyon and plays out like a phone call to his mother.
The lyrics include:
What’s going on mama?
Something’s just dawned on me
I ain’t been home in some months
Been chasing songs and women
Making some bad decisions
God knows I’m drinking too much
Yeah, I know you’ve been worrying ‘bout me
You’ve been losing sleep since ’93
I thought you should know that all those prayers you thought you wasted on me
Must’ve finally made their way on through
I thought you should know I got me a new girl down in Jefferson City and she lets me fish whenever I want to
Yeah, I’m still proud of where I came from
Still your only damn son
Can you believe I’m on the radio?
Just thought you should know, Thought you should know, Thought you should know
Wallen announced the song’s release date several days ago on social media alongside a throwback photo of himself and his mom from when he was a baby.
“Thank you Mama. Dropping this song for you on Mothers Day weekend,” he captioned the post, which also included a teaser of the song.
“Can’t wait! Love my boy,” his mom replied in the comments section.
Wallen first teased “Thought You Should Know” on social media in May of 2021 with an acoustic performance of the heartfelt track.
“I wrote this song for my mom a while ago. Seemed like an appropriate time to share it,” Wallen captioned the clip that has now raked in over 2.7 million views.
“Thought You Should Know” follows the recording-breaking debut of the East Tennessee native’s “Don’t Think Jesus.”
Upon release, “Don’t Think Jesus” made Billboard chart history as it debuted atop the April 30-dated Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. With this achievement, Wallen is now the first artist to score three No.1 debuts on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart (based on airplay, streaming and sales) since October 1958 when the survey began.
According to Billboard, Wallen’s previous chart-topping debuts came with the release of “Wasted On You,” his current single at country radio, and “7 Summers.” He previously topped the Hot Country Songs chart after a 30-week run with “Whiskey Glasses.”
Since the inception of Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, only 11 songs have debuted at the top and only one other artist has scored multiple No.1 debuts: Taylor Swift, who skyrocketed to the top of the chart with the release of “All Too Well (Taylor’s Version)” and “Love Story (Taylor’s Version)” in 2021.
Wallen performed “Don’t Think Jesus” for the first time ever on Thursday (April 28) when his The Dangerous Tour stopped at the Resch Center Complex in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
The Dangerous Tour runs through October and is scheduled for a break until May 12 when it resumes with a run of shows in Denver, CO (May 12), Rapid City, SD (May 13), and Billings, MT (May 14).
Morgan Wallen is currently climbing the charts at country radio with his latest single, “Wasted On You,” from his wildly successful sophomore project, Dangerous: The Double Album.
