Megan Moroney has made a name for herself by writing songs that offer healing and hard-earned wisdom to girls everywhere. One of her newest unreleased tracks, “Beautiful Things,” continues that pattern, but this time it was inspired by her young niece and the inevitable heartbreaks she may face as she grows up.
The Georgia native previewed the heartfelt tune during a VIP acoustic show that took place prior to a recent tour stop. Sitting on the stage in her casual outfit and signature rhinestone guitar in hand, Moroney share the story behind the song with the intimate crowd.

She explained that every time she sets her eyes on that two-year-old girl, she’s forced to reflect on her own experiences with heartbreak in many different forms. Knowing all the pain she’s felt over the years, Moroney wrote this song to give her niece something to listen to when she’s going through those same emotions one day.
“I have a little niece. She just turned two a couple days ago, and I have a nephew and I love him so much, but there was something about seeing a little baby girl that’s perfect and angelic and me just knowing how the world works and being like, oh my God, one day maybe someone won’t invite her to a party or something, and then she’s inevitably going to get her heartbroken one day like, holy sh**, I have to write a song so that she can listen to it when that happens and she feels no sadness ever,” Moroney explained.

She then joked that based on the amount of protectiveness she feels over her little niece, it’s inevitable that she’s going to be a “nightmare of a mom” when she has kids one day. By writing this song, Megan Moroney is preparing for what could lie ahead and preemptively offering advice for her future daughter.
“If this is how I feel about my niece, I just…but I wrote her this song so that one day when she grows up and she ever needs it, she has it,” she said. “So it’s called ‘Beautiful Things.’”
The song opens with the “6 Months Later” singer channeling the deep sadness that comes from feeling left out and betrayed by friends after discovering they were all at a party without her. Moroney then reveals that the second verse finds her lending advice to the moment her niece experiences her first heartbreak, pulling from the emotions that she knows all too well.
“You’re pretty and you’re smart/ God made a work of art/ Girl don’t pick yourself apart/ Quit wondering why he did it/ Nothing about you needs fixing/ It ain’t what you are it’s what he isn’t/ Oh I know it don’t feel fair/ But oh I can’t count the times I’ve been there,” she sings.

Moroney’s gut-punching songwriting comes out in full force once she reaches the chorus. Using natural disasters and the physical damage they cause as metaphors for the pain people can experience, she paints a vivid picture of how harsh the world can be. Each line of the vulnerable lyrics builds on the idea that even the most graceful and pure things aren’t immune to the destruction in the world. But at the heart of it all is a message of reassurance as she sends a gentle warning to her loved one while also reminding them of their worth.
Moroney sings, “Fires burn up canyons/ A hurricane can wreck a beach/ Words can make a mockingbird forget they’re born to sing/ Lies can break a fragile heart/ And doubt can crush your dreams/ But honey just take it from me/ The world is hard on beautiful things.”
Last month, the songstress dropped the highly anticipated music video for her buzzed-about song, “6 Months Later,” which serves as another prime example of her ability to bring empowerment to a tough situation. This theme of vulnerability is a common thread that also runs through past releases like “I’m Not Pretty,” “Girl In the Mirror,” “Indifferent” and more.
Fans still have plenty of chances to catch Megan Moroney on her current headlining run, the AM I OKAY? Tour, with shows running through October.
