Nate Smith has claimed the top spot on the Mediabase country this week with his fiery heartbreak anthem, “Bulletproof.” This marks smith’s third consecutive No. 1, following “Whiskey On You” and “World on Fire.”
The country star learned the milestone news while in Canada for the Boots and Hearts festival. Before taking the stage, he posted a video to Instagram expressing how grateful he is to be surrounded by such loyal fans as well as a team who has helped him claim this exciting feat.
“I’m out here in Toronto about to play Boots and Hearts. I’m super, super excited right now. It’s a very, very special day because ‘Bulletproof’ just went number one, so holy crap. Freaking out. Excited,” he began before going on to share gratitude for the writers responsible for the song – Ashley Gorley, Ben Johnson and Hunter Phelps. “Ashley, Hunter, Ben, thank you for trusting me with the song. Thank You Country Radio for embracing the heck out of this man. I’m still a brand-new artist and this makes three straight consecutive number ones.”
“It’s amazing. This is so cool. So thank you everybody. Thank you to RCA, my radio team, but most importantly above everybody else, thank you to fans that support me and listen to my music. I love you guys with all my heart about to play this damn thing today. I am so excited to see you all out there. Let’s do this thing,” he added in conclusion.
Even though Smith couldn’t be with his family in person to commemorate this major achievement, his dad made sure to send his love through a hilarious and heartfelt text message that read, “Congrats man, so proud of you Nate #1 for the 3rd time…just ecstatic you have a job!!”
He did, however, get to celebrate with the lucky fans who attended his set at the Canadian music festival. While on stage, the California native welcomed his surprise guest, Canadian punk rock sensation, Avril Lavigne, who lent her vocals to a collaborative version of “Bulletproof.” This isn’t the first time the artists of different genres have taken the stage together. They also performed their duet on the 2024 ACM Awards earlier this year.
“Bulletproof” offers a remedy for the kind of heartbreak that just won’t go away, no matter how hard you try. Smith puts his emotions on full display while illustrating the moment he hits the bottom of the bottle in an attempt to drown out the pain.
“I’ve tried Jack/ I’ve tried Jim/ I’ve tried every last one of them/ Old heartbreak bottles up on that shelf/ But the burn don’t work and the buzz don’t help/ Been takin’ these shots, shots, shots/ 80, 90, everything they’ve got/ But the whiskey don’t kill like it’s ‘sposed to do/ Baby, your memory must be bulletproof,” he sings on the chorus.
Much like fans, Smith was instantly drawn to the epic guitar plucks and steady drumbeats and knew he needed to add it to his discography.
“Bulletproof” is one of seven songs featured on his Through The Smoke EP. Nate Smith’s next headline tour, which is named after the project, will kick off on September 19 in Portland, OR and continue through November.
