Post Malone stepped in for Jelly Roll on Wednesday, joining Ashley McBryde on the Grand Ole Opry stage for a performance of the Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash classic, “Jackson,” during NBC’s Opry 100: A Live Celebration.
Jelly Roll was originally scheduled to perform the iconic duet with McBryde, but when he couldn’t make it, Post Malone filled in and delivered a standout performance alongside the Opry member.
McBryde’s rich country vocals paired seamlessly with Posty’s deep, gritty tone, creating a perfect blend and an unforgettable Opry moment.
“I’m goin’ to Jackson/ And that’s a fact/ Yeah, we’re goin’ to Jackson/ Ain’t never comin’ back,” they sang.
At the end of the performance, Post Malone took his hat off, gave a bow and embraced McBryde with a smile as the audience roared with applause.
Written by Billy Edd Wheeler and Jerry Leiber, “Jackson” was originally recorded by other artists, however, Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash recorded the song in 1967 and made it a huge hit. The pair also won a GRAMMY for their recording, taking home the title of Best Country & Western Performance Duet, Trio, or Group in 1968. Another version of the song, performed by Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon appears on the soundtrack for the film, Walk the Line.
A performance honoring the legacy of Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash was especially meaningful since the pair originally met backstage at the Opry in July of 1956. They went on to share one of country music’s greatest love stories.
NBC’s Opry 100: A Live Celebration took place at the Grand Ole Opry House and Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium in celebration of the Grand Ole Opry’s 100th anniversary. The star-studded broadcast honored the Opry’s century-long legacy in country music, featuring once-in-a-lifetime performances and emotional tributes from some of the biggest names in the genre.
The performance lineup included Alan Jackson, Alison Krauss & Union Station, Ashley McBryde, Blake Shelton, Brad Paisley, Carly Pearce, Carrie Underwood, Clint Black, Dierks Bentley, Garth Brooks, Jamey Johnson, Keith Urban, Kelsea Ballerini, Lainey Wilson, Luke Combs, Reba McEntire, Ricky Skaggs, Trace Adkins, Vince Gill, and many more.
