Remember When Alan Jackson Released ‘Livin’ On Love’?

Alan Jackson released his charming single “Livin’ On Love” on this day in 1994. 

The Country Music Hall of Famer released the song as the second single from his fifth studio album, Who I Am. It quickly became his ninth No. 1 hit on the Billboard Country Singles and Tracks Charts as well as No. 1 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart. 

Written solely by Alan Jackson himself, the upbeat love ballad captures the story of a couple who spends a lifetime together living without much besides their love for one another.

“Livin’ on love, buyin’ on time / Without somebody nothing ain’t worth a dime / Just like an old fashion story book rhyme / Livin’ on love / It sounds simple, that’s what you’re thinkin’ / But love can walk through fire without blinkin’ / It doesn’t take much when you get enough / Livin’ on love,” Jackson sings on the chorus. 

Directed by Piers Plowden, the official music video for “Livin’ On Love” was also released in August 1994. It goes through the different kinds of love people may share while delivering the message of love overpowering anything materialistic.

Throughout the video, two boys are seen enjoying each other’s company while playing in the water, good samaritans are seen setting up a soup kitchen for the homeless, and a mother is seen comforting her daughter after a fall off of the swings.

In between the clips of these other relationships, viewers watch the couple grow old together. In the beginning, the couple is young and in love, eager to start their life together. They share a hug and then the man sweeps her off her feet as they enter their new home for the first time.

As the video continues, the couple ages and they become empty nesters. They are seen sitting on their front porch, holding hands, and still in love. Though he can barely see and she can barely sweep, they remain united as one.

The “Livin On Love” music video gives fans a glimpse of what true love is like. It showcases not only the positive aspects and the joy that come with love, but also see the difficulties and disagreements that people may encounter. 

Towards the end of the video, the younger version of the couple is moving into their house. The man attempts to put a pot on the shelf, but it slips out of his hands and shatters on the cabinet. The woman is irritated with him for being so careless, but it wasn’t enough to tear them apart. 

“Livin On Love” is another timeless love song from Jackson and a regularly played song on his setlist. Jackson performed this hit in 2020 as he hosted the first large-scale car side show in North America since COVID-19. The fans showed their love for this experience and for Jackson by dancing and waving American flags during the concert. 

Jackson suffers from Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT), which has forced him to take a step back from touring. Though he would like to perform as long as he can, the disease often intervenes. In 2022, Jackson completed what might be his last tour, “Last Call: One More For The Road.”
