Brendan Coulter may have been singing a Jelly Roll song, but by the end of his The Voice Blind Audition, “Liar” sounded like it belonged to him.
The 27-year-old Sylvania, Ohio, native, who is now based in New York, took on the hit track, but instead of trying to recreate the original recording, Coulter gave the hit a more pop-country feel that showcased his own style.
Coulter began the performance slowly, guitar in hand, allowing the tension to build with each line. As the beat intensified, so did his delivery, but his vocals remained steady and powerful throughout the entire delivery. By putting his own spin on the song, the hopeful singer showed the coaches that he could take a recognizable song and truly make it his own.

His performance was enough to earn chair turns from both Riley Green and Kelly Clarkson.
Green immediately gave Coulter his seal of approval, noting that Jelly Roll himself would be “proud” of his performance.
The rising star explained that he mainly is drawn to songs in the pop-country realm, something that Green stated could work especially well on The Voice, allowing him to showcase both his vocal range and his ability to tell a story through a song.
“Also, you’re going to appeal to somebody like me who loves a country song and storytelling. So I think it’s a really great fit,” he stated.
Coach Adam Levine did not turn his chair, however he did his best to convince Coulter to join Team Kelly, pointing out that she would be a better fit as she has dipped her toe in country and pop genres.
When it was Kelly Clarkson’s turn to speak, she explained that the thing about his performance that won her over was his ability to make her want to cover a song.
“That’s pretty powerful because I was like, this is a great song. I like working with people that care about what they’re singing. The song was really smart and I think that this competition is about song selection. Welcome to The Voice Man. You did a great job.”
Green Clapped back at Levine’s statement as he claimed that his musical influences extend far beyond country music. He said that he grew up listening to everything from rock to The Mamas & the Papas, Weezer, Sublime and No Doubt. He even revealed that he still performs “Dear Mama” whenever his mom comes to one of his shows.
Despite admitting that he had been “dead set” on choosing Clarkson for a long time, Coulter ultimately threw everyone a curveball when he decided to join Team Riley.
The decision to join Team Green gives the “Worst Way” singer another artist with a smooth voice and plenty of range to work with, and hopefully make it to the finale and take home the win.
“Brendan’s voice is very smooth, but he also had some notes in there that really showed me he’s got some range,” Green added.
Fans can continue to watch Brendan Coulter’s journey as The Voice airs with new episodes on Monday & Tuesday at 8/7c on NBC and next day on Peacock.
