Roman Alexander just dropped the ultimate breakup anthem for the warm weather months. His brand-new song titled “Sad Song Summer” offers a pain-filled narrative amid mid-tempo guitar strums and laid-back drum beats that serve as the perfect way to make a bad situation better.
“Sad Song Summer” was co-written by Trevor Rosen and Matt Ramsey of Old Dominion, along with Matt Dragstrem. Alexander admits after hearing the unique narrative, he instantly knew he couldn’t pass up the chance to add the song to his catalog.
“When I heard ’Sad Song Summer’ for the first time, I knew it was a ‘must’ to record,” Alexander shared. “Rarely do you hear breakup songs that can somehow make you feel good or happy. The song is about an undesirable situation but with its feel-good melody, makes you want to listen on repeat while sipping on tequila.”
While it has the undertones of a tear-jerker, the track finds a way to induce a joyful feeling, thus making you wonder if it can truly even be considered a sad song.
With his charming vocals on full display, Alexander sings from the perspective of someone who is “blue as the sky in July” as they recently got their heart broken. The character at hand was originally planning for a fun-filled summer with his other half by his side, however, things took a turn and now he’s preparing to get through the next few months with the help of somber tracks.
“Thought it was gonna be you and me/ Pretty toes painted red on your bare feet/ Propped up on the dashboard, windows down/ Turning up the heat every time the sun went down/ Town in the palm of our hands, with new tattoos/ Tipping the band to play something we could dance to/ Had it all planned out but damn you/ Killed my groove.”
Alexander continues on the chorus, “It’s a sad song summer, tears in my Tequila/ Heartbreak bummers blowing up the speakers/ With a never-coming-back sayonara soundtrack/ Turn it up, turn it up, turn it up/ It’s a sad song summer.”
