Thomas Rhett returned to the Grand Ole Opry stage on Saturday night (June 12) for an unforgettable sold-out show alongside his father, award-winning singer/songwriter Rhett Akins.

Their performance marked the first time a father and son played the Opry on the same evening and the first time Thomas, 31, and Rhett, 51, performed on the Opry stage together.

Rhett first took the stage to perform his 1995 hit, “That Ain’t My Truck” and went on to perform “Boys ‘Round Here,” a No.1 track he wrote for Blake Shelton. Thomas soon followed with performances of “Die A Happy Man,” “Country Again,” and “Sixteen.”

Thomas invited his father to join him on the stage and they joined forces to perform the chart-topping hit, “What’s Your Country Song.”

“Do y’all understand how freakin’ cool this is right here? We are going to play a song we wrote together. It’s the first single off my latest album,” Thomas gushed.

“This is unbelievable,” Rhett added. “You were over there [pointing to side of stage] at two years old watching me play. We’ve written songs in the kitchen since you were eight years old and now we are singing one we wrote together on the Grand Ole Opry that went to #1!”

The father/son moment earned the pair a standing ovation from the sold-out crowd.

Rhett’s wife, Sonya, was on-hand to document the memorable evening and shared an adorable snapshot of a moment backstage with Thomas, his dad, and his little brother, Brody James.

“Loved watching this father and son show tonight at the Opry,” Sonia shared on Instagram. “Little bro loved watching too!!!”

Sonya and Rhett welcomed Brody James in March of 2020. It’s their first child together, while Rhett is also father to Thomas and his sister, Kasey Lee.

Thomas will celebrate Father’s Day with the release of another song he co-wrote with his dad. “Things Dads Do” will be released on Wednesday. It’s available for pre-order HERE
