Toby Keith says he is feeling “pretty good” and reveals he is trying other treatment options amid his ongoing battle with stomach cancer.
The country music icon first shared his diagnosis with fans back in June of 2022 and since then, he has taken the necessary measures to spend time with family, focus on his health, and slowly creep his way back into the spotlight. According to Keith’s recent guest appearance on the sports podcast, Sellout Crowd, it appears that he is still taking things day by day and doing everything he can to try the “best treatments” available to him.
Health Update
“It’s a rollercoaster all the time with this stuff. I have the resources financially and otherwise to get the best treatments I can get. They’re taking great care of me and I’m getting all the latest stuff you can get,” he said during the segment dubbed Conversations with Coach. “In fact, I’m going to Florida to see another guy down there that’s got some other kind of treatments and I’m trying ’em all I’m throwing the kitchen sink at it.”
Staying Positive
Even in this difficult time, Keith continues to hold onto the positives, like being able to use his platform to spread awareness and potentially even help others who are fighting their own battles with cancer.
He continued, “Cancer’s an island and you’re on a boat and nobody goes over to that island when you don’t have it. And as soon as you crash land on it, there’s a lot of boats there. Everybody’s got this stuff, and it’s more than people think. So I was like, ‘if I can survive this and live to tell my story, maybe I can save somebody else’s life.’”
Returning To The Stage
Since sharing his diagnosis last year, Keith has spent more time away from touring than ever before in his career. He has made small on-stage appearances in that time and even mustered up enough strength to deliver a powerful performance of his song, “Don’t Let The Old Man In” during the Inaugural People’s Choice Country Awards in September. This marked the Oklahoma native’s first major awards show performance since 2017 when he appeared on ACM Honors to sing “Who’s Your Daddy.”
Now, he’s gearing up to return to the stage in a big way. He will make his way to Las Vegas in mid-December for a sold-out, three-night stint at Dolby Live at Park MGM.
Keith was originally scheduled to only perform two nights at the Vegas venue – Sunday, December 10 and Monday, December 11. However, after selling out the shows in just two minutes, he surprised fans with the news that he would be adding a third night on Thursday, December 14.
The latest addition to his upcoming residency saw just as much success as tickets were gone within just moments after the sale went live.
Toby Keith Says He Won’t “Let My Illness Define Me”
In another clip pulled from his interview on the Sellout Crowd podcast, Keith showed true excitement as he prepares to finally get the band back together and continue doing what he loves.
“I haven’t worked in two years. First time in my life I’ve never worked. My dad would kick my butt,” he joked. “But I’m not going to let my illness define me. I said, I’m going to go forward…if everything goes good with, if I get through ’em…I will. I’ll crush ’em,” he said, changing his tune to a more confident mindset.
The “I Love This Bar” singer further stressed that it will be no easy feat getting back up in front of packed-out crowds after his hiatus, and one of his main points of focus at the moment is reviewing his beloved catalog of songs.
“I got to get used to my lyrics again. I know I wrote all those songs, but I still got to remember ’em, and I’ve never been through this before. But yeah, we’re going to blow it up,” he added.
New Album, “100% Songwriter”
These Sin City shows will allow Fans to reconnect with Keith’s discography of 52 top 10 hits, 32 No. 1’s, and more than 40 million albums sold. This includes his breakout hit, “Should’ve Been A Cowboy,” which appears on Keith’s new album, 100% Songwriter.
The 13-track collection dropped on November 3 and celebrates some of the icon’s most beloved solo-written songs. Along with the triple platinum “Should’ve Been A Cowboy,” the project also showcases fan favorites such as “He Ain’t Worth Missin’,” “Wish I Didn’t Know Now,” and “Big Ol’ Truck.”
