Just weeks ahead of the release of Country Stuff The Album, Walker Hayes dropped “Drinking Songs,” a brand new track from the project.
Out now, “Drinking Songs” finds Hayes drowning his sorrows from a broken heart with a glass of “strong stuff on a few rocks.”
He goes on to tip his hat to Hank Williams Jr. as he realizes his ex is never coming back.
“So give me that bourbon and bocephus/ I can’t help me so help me Jesus/ She ain’t coming back like you she gone/ So what I need is in Williams’ voice right now/ Hank and Evan don’t let me down/ Bring them family traditions on/ I’mma just keep sittin and sippin’ and singing along/ Thank God for drinking and drinking songs,” Hayes sings.
Hayes admits he still connects with the song even though he’s a recovering alcoholic.
“’Drinking Songs’ is one of my favorites off the new album,” the father of six shares. “I don’t drink anymore but I still connect with how a song can get you through, just like a drink can for some people. We’ve all been in a bar full of people singing together, arms around each other. Plus, the lyrics and the beat just have a relatable quality to them that feels so country to me.”
“Drinking Songs” was written by Hayes alongside Jordan Gray and produced by “Fancy Like” collaborator Joe Thibodeau and multi-Grammy Award Winner Shane McAnally.
The song follows the release of “AA,” “U Gurl,” and Hayes’ first No.1 hit, “Fancy Like.”
Country Stuff The Album officially arrives on January 21. The singer/songwriter will celebrate the release with the launch of his Fancy Like Tour.
