After living in Nashville for eight years, 31-year-old Brandy Neelly finally brought her country roots with her to The Voice stage.

During her Blind Audition, Brandy performed a heart pounding cover of Jo Dee Messina’s late 90s hit, “Lesson In Leavin’,” earning chair turns from Riley Green and Queen Latifah. Her performance showcased her smooth vocals, impressive range and true raw talent that immediately made an impression on both of the newest coaches on the NBC competition series.

But it turns out that her and Green already had a little history. The rising country artist revealed that she had previously baked a birthday cake for Green’s birthday after starting a baking business on the side, giving the two an unexpected connection before she ever stepped onto The Voice stage.

“I remember that cake. It was delicious,” the superstar stated as he stared at a photo of the cake.

That sweet moment made Brandy’s Blind Audition even more memorable, but it was ultimately her voice that had Green turning his chair first. He praised her soulful delivery, traditional country influence and ability to make the song sound uniquely her own.

“Obviously love the song. It was a great performance. It was fun. You had a lot of soul in your voice and it’s got a traditional feel to it that I loved about it. You did it in a way that didn’t sound like anybody else,” he stated. “And that’s exciting to me because you’ve got a sound that’s unique. I think today with all the avenues of music coming out, the best you can be is different and you’ve certainly got your own sound. So congratulations.”

Then it was Queen Latifah’s turn to try and persuade Brandy to join her team this season.

“Brandy, there is nothing like a woman who can come out here and rock a song like that, sing that, have buckles on her pants. And she makes the cake, okay. And you just sound beautiful. Your energy was on point, your pocket was rocking. I said, ‘Listen, she is keeping this. She’s making me turn around and I think you’re going to make the world love you.’ So welcome to this show.”

Even though fellow returning coach Adam Levine did not turn his chair, he still wanted to help Brandy made the best decision for herself as she moves forward in the competition.

“Before you decide, I want you to know, this man has such a lock on the country artists, right? Totally makes sense. But I’d rather you stand out on Queen’s team than be sent into this country gauntlet on Riley’s team. I want you to have your own lane,” he explained. “So I’m just saying before you definitely choose Riley, maybe just think about strategy. I know, I get it. I know you made him a cake.”

Riley Green even jumped in and offered to make her a cake if she chose him.

When it was time to choose, Brandy revealed she would be sticking to her “country roots” and choosing to join Team Riley, with the confidence that she will still be able to stand out among all the other country music artists on this team.

Green added that he immediately knew Brandy Neelly was an artist that he wanted to snag and he accomplished that goal.

The Season 30 blind auditions continue tonight, airing at 8/7c on NBC.
