Jo Dee Messina and Alexandra Kay teamed up for an acoustic jam session that incorporated Kay’s original track, “Backroad Therapy” and Messina’s 1998 release, “Bye Bye.”
The pair recently got the chance to hang out during their appearance at the Tailgate N’ Tallboys Iowa music festival, which took place June 8-10 in Clinton, IA. Taking to social media to share a glimpse into their time backstage, the singer/songwriters shared a clip that saw Kay taking the lead with her song and Messina joining in to finish off with one of her biggest hits.
As they took turns letting their silky vocals shine, the female country artists smiled from ear to ear, showing nothing but support for each other.
Messina’s caption read, “So much fun hanging with @alexandrakaymusic!”
As the clip came to a close, Alexandra Kay and Jo Dee Messina embraced in a hug.
The acoustic jam session came about because Kay name-drops Messina and “Bye Bye” in her “Backroad Therapy” song. Messina was a fan of the track and the rest is history.
“Bye-Bye” was penned by Rory Michael and Phil Vassar and appeared as a single on Messina’s album, I’m Alright. Fans quickly fell in love with the track which remained No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart for two weeks following its debut on airplay. It later went on to be certified gold by the RIAA.
This song is also featured on Messina’s latest collection, Heads Carolina, Tails California: The Best of Jo Dee Messina. Released in March 2023, this marks her first-ever greatest hits collection.
The album features 11 of her signature hits including fan-favorites such as “Bye, Bye,” “I’m Alright,” “Lesson In Leavin,’” ”Heads Carolina, Tails California” and more.
Additionally, the project also serves as Messina’s first-ever vinyl release on a limited-edition, 180-gram clear vinyl with wisps of color throughout.
“It’s amazing to look at this list of songs and be able to capture those moments in time,” Messina previously shared, adding, “to actually be able to hold my music on vinyl is such a gift!”
Kay has also released some music of her own this year. So far, she has dropped two new songs – “I Hate Airplanes” and “Dammit.” The rising star bares her soul through the powerful yet soulful narratives as her authentic vocals run free.
Her latest release, “I Hate Airplanes” depicts a long-distance love story between Kay and a former partner who was in the military. Ten years later, Kay is being vulnerable as she illustrates her longing to be closer to that special person instead of being “ten million miles apart.”
She sings, “When there’s a 737 on the runway / Just begging to break my heart / And every ticket feels like a one way / To ten million miles apart / Oh, those wheels up in the air / They don’t even care / About the tears rollin’ down my face / They’re always takin’ off / Always takin’ you away / I hate airplanes.”
Following their recent performances at Nashville’s CMA Fest and Iowa’s Tailgates N’ Tallboys festival, Messina and Kay both have a slew of various appearances on the books for the year.
Alexandra Kay is set to play festivals including Bay City Country Music Festival, Country Fest, Tailgate N’ Tallboys, and more. Then, she will embark on her Dive Bar Dreamer A Tour, which kicks off July 19 in Wichita, KS and continues across North American before ending in Athens, GA on August 8.
Meanwhile, Jo Dee Messina is still in the midst of her 45-plus date Heads Carolina Tails California Tour. Named after her 1996 debut single, “Heads Carolina, Tails California,” this is the first time Messina has toured under the iconic hit’s name. This trek launched on March 25 and will run through November where she’s set to wrap up in Indio, CA.
