Koe Wetzel made his late-night debut on Thursday evening with a performance of “High Road” alongside Jessie Murph on CBS’ The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
After being introduced by Colbert, Wetzel and Murph stepped onto the stage at the iconic Ed Sullivan Theater with a live band to deliver the debut television performance of their collaborative single, which explores the ups and downs of a tumultuous relationship.
Keeping things close to the recorded version, Wetzel kicked off the first verse and the first chorus, and Murph joined in for the second verse.
When the second chorus hits, they join together singing, “I’ma take the high road, baby get stoned/ Have a little too much of something terrible/ I’ma let you cool down while I walk out/ You ain’t messing me up like the times before/ I don’t need a ticket to your shitshow/ Knock yourself out and hit a new low/ Well, I’ma take the high road, take the high road, take the high road.”
Co-written by Wetzel with Amy Allen, Carrie Karpinen, and producer Gabe Simon, the song is featured on his newly released 9 Lives album.
“‘High Road’ is a good example of how this album shows a different side of me than people might expect. Every record’s almost turning a new leaf, always a left turn because of how honest I am,” Wetzel recently shared with a laugh. “But this? It’s what the people have been expecting from me, but we hadn’t gotten there yet. It’s a grown-up version of me.”
“High Road” marks an important chapter in Wetzel’s career as it’s his first official single at country radio. According to a recent release, the song is already Top 40 on Billboard charts after just six weeks.
Wetzel, who recently scored two People’s Choice Country Awards nominations, including nods for The New Artist of 2024 and The New Artist Song of 2024 for “Sweet Dreams.” is currently in the midst of his headlining Damn Near Normal World Tour. See a complete list of upcoming tour dates below.
