Matt Stell and a few of his fellow country singer/songwriters recently appeared at 93Q Country’s Cowboys & Angels benefit concert, where they each got the chance to showcase their songwriting skills by performing songs they’ve penned. When it was Stell’s turn, he opted to play a tune that he revealed would soon be recorded by Morgan Wallen.

Before diving into the song, the rising star revealed that the story’s concept was initially inspired by his girlfriend. However, Wallen suggested altering the lyrics to focus on his son, Indigo, instead of a woman. So this writer’s round was Stell’s opportunity to play the song how it was originally written before it’s slightly altered to have a different meaning.

“Morgan Wallen’s going to cut this song and change some words and make it about his son and I think that’s pretty special, but I thought I better play it now about homegirl because once he cuts it, it’s gonna be about a little boy,” he shared with the audience in a clip captured by a concertgoers.

The Original Story

Stell strummed his guitar while delivering the track acoustically, which allowed listeners to truly hear the story he was telling and the heartfelt message he was trying to get across. Throughout the song, he reflects on a person who walked into his life and made him want to leave his wild carefree days in the past and instead slow things down and be a bit more cautious about the choices he makes. Now, he finds himself “walking on the street side of the sidewalk,” “sleeping on the bedside by the door,” and “looking both ways twice” before crossing the street.

He sings, “I never had nothing worth taking/ Never gave a lot thought to it/ If someone ever tried to break in, good chance I’d a slept right through it/ But since she started sleeping at my place/ I ain’t put it back in the safe/ Cause I finally got a hold of something I can never replace.”

Once he reaches the chorus, Stell hones in on his instinctive desire to make sure that their home is a safe place. The Arkansas native goes on to say he hopes he will never have to use his weapon, but he wants to be ready to provide protection for the person he loves if anything were to happen.

“I keep one in the chamber/ I keep my powder dry/ I sleep with one eye open so she can sweet dream all night/ I was wide open reckless/ Living it fast and lose/ These days I’m playing it safer/I keep one in the chamber/ ‘Cause now I got something to lose,” Stell delivers.

Earned Approval From Fellow Songwriters

At the end of the performance, he earned a round of applause from both the audience as well as the songwriters next to him, Maddie & Tae.

“It’s really sweet,” Tae noted before asking if the woman knows that the song was inspired by her, to which Stell confirmed that “she knows.”

Stell’s set also featured his first No. 1 hit, “Prayed For You” and his second top-charting single on country radio, “Everywhere But On.”

It’s been over a month since Matt Stell unleased his debut albumBorn Lonely, and since then, he’s been celebrating on the road while playing his songs to fans across the country at various fairs and festivals. This weekend, he will make his way to stages in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Maine.
