Sam Hunt has always kept matters of the family out of the public eye, but with the release of his four-song Locked Up EP earlier this year, he started to give fans a rare glimpse into his world. Today, we see Hunt open up even more about his personal life in a heartfelt music video for the song “Country House,” which stars several members of his family.
As the pure country tune plays, Hunt and his wife, Hannah Lee Fowler, take viewers inside the quiet white home, where they are raising their two young kids, a son named Lowery and a daughter named Lucy Louise, who Hunt calls “Weesie.”
The intimate moments of waking up to a bright blue sky and all sitting down at the table for breakfast together fit right into the opening lyrics where Hunt paints an image of the kind of calm and peaceful life he envisions for himself.
“Bible by the bed, double barrel by the door/ Chickens on the rooftop, hickory on the floor/ Down a little dirt road out here/Somewhere where the sunshine shines/Where you can let your hair down, and I can ride some squares ’round/ Our own little fresh patch of beans/ Where I can run my bird dogs, cut the grass with my shirt off/ Swim in an old pair of jeans,” he sings.
Showcasing The Serenity Of The South
Other members of Hunt’s family slowly start to make their way onto the screen, including his mom and dad, Joan and Allen, his brother Van with his wife, Jenna, and his other brother, Ben with his other half, Nicole, and their three kids, Parker, Coleman, and Caroline.
Together, they enjoy a traditional summer day in the south that finds the men playing baseball in the open yard and the women picking flowers from the garden. After changing into their Sunday Best, they make their way to mass in the tiny church in town, followed by a supper prepared by the wives as a way to end the day surrounded by comfort and good company.
Pure joy is written across the country star’s face as he takes in every moment of this precious day with his loved ones, that is chronicled in the nostalgia-ridden tune penned by Sam Hunt with Ross Copperman, Michael Lotten, and Josh Osborne.
While announcing the new video to social media, Hunt shared, “Every time I wear a jacket now my little Weesie says “You look country house” Making this video is a memory I will hold dear. Thank you to everyone who helped us make it. What a fun couple of days.”
The Georgia native’s roots come out stronger than ever before as his charming vocals continue through the chorus that are sung directly to his wife.
“Baby, I wanna live in a country house, in a country house with you/ I want a stove full of wood and coal on a hill with a heavenly view/ Where the days are longer and our love gets stronger/ And the grass is a little bit blue/ Cuttin’ wood for the whittle of it, out in the middle of the country/ In a country house with you.”
A Shift In Sound And Appearance
The video provides a touching and intimate look at the people who matter most to Sam Hunt and reflects where his priorities lie at this point in his life. It’s safe to say that the singer’s wild days are behind him, and he has officially reached the point of settling down. He started to lean more heavily into this new image with his latest No. 1 “Outskirts,” followed by “Locked Up,” as well as the other two remining songs on his EP – “Last Hurrah” and “Country House.”
Even Hunt’s appearance reflects this change, as he has stepped away from his sharper, more stylish ensembles, and now prefers to dress in a more traditional way that reflects his upbringing. During a previous interview with Country Now and other outlets, Hunt openly discussed the motivation for this shift in his sound and look.
“It’s the way my mom dressed me as a kid. Being from the South, that’s just the way that all the adults dress where I’m from. So yeah, I think that’s a big part of it,” Hunt shared honestly before taking a moment to reflect on his more rebellious years.
“Early on when I was younger, I wanted to push back on norms and traditions and buck the system a little bit. And I think the state of the world now, it feels more like chaos and less like order that needs to be pushed up against. So I feel the need to order myself more and tuck my shirt in and dress up. But part of it I think is just getting older and I consider myself country, I’m from the south, but I’m not the same kind of country that some of my buddies were that I grew up with. So it is more southern than country, I guess you could say. I guess I’m just finally settling into my roots at the end of the day.”
Seeing Himself Through The Eyes Of His Kids
He went on to admit that having kids has also been a big reason for him to take on this new perspective of life as he realizes he now sees himself through their eyes.
“I think about my dad and my granddad and all the men that raised me and they were stable and put together…there was security and comfort I found in that, and I want my children to have that as well. I hope they have a little bit of a rebel spirit like I did, but I want them from their dad to find that safe, secure, comfortable place, at least for now while they’re young,” he added.
Sam Hunt is currently on his headline Locked Up Tour with only a few more dates left. Joining him on this run through September are special guests Russell Dickerson, Dalton Dover and George Birge on select dates
