A social media exchange between Kristi Noem and Kacey Musgraves has caught the public’s attention following the country star’s recent performance in her home state of Texas over the weekend.
On Sunday, October 11, Texas State Representative James Talarico took to X (formerly Twitter) to share two photos with Musgraves after attending a Texas stop on her Middle of Nowhere Tour.
He captioned the post, “Thank you for having me last night, Kacey Musgraves.”

The following day, Noem, the former secretary of Homeland Security, reposted Talarico’s photos on X and criticized both Musgraves and the Democratic Senate candidate. She indicated that her preference for the 2026 U.S. Senate race would be Republican Ken Paxton over Talarico, who is currently leading in polls in the red state.
Noem also brought country singer Ella Langley into the discussion, referencing her hit song “Choosin’ Texas.”
She wrote, “I’ll take Ella Langley over Kacey Musgraves any day. And if I’m choosin’ Texas, I’ll take Ken Paxton over James Talarico.”

Langley appeared to distance herself from the conversation, as her X handle was quickly untagged from the post.
However, the situation escalated from there as Musgraves fired back with a remark referencing the controversy surrounding Noem’s 2024 memoir, No Going Back: The Truth on What’s Wrong with Politics and How We Move America Forward. The book drew criticism from the public after Noem shared a story admitting that she had shot and killed her 14-month-old dog, Cricket, because she considered the animal difficult to manage.
Musgraves wrote, “I don’t think you have a dog in this fight but if you did you would have shot it.”

Talarico has since returned to X with another photo of him posing with Musgraves alongside a caption that reads, “Don’t Mess with Texas.”
Following the encounter, the “Dry Spell” singer took to her Instagram stories to share a post that reads, “3 dates every TX voter should know,” including when early voting begins, when mail ballots are due and election day on Nov. 3.
Kristi Noem previously served as secretary of Homeland Security, but was let go from her role in March of this year after finding herself at the center of several controversies. She was transitioned to becoming the U.S. special envoy to the Shield of the Americas under the Trump Administration.
Neither Musgraves, Langley nor Noem have appeared to comment and further on the discussion, however fans have flooded social media sharing their opinions on the matter, with many taking notice to Langley’s choice to remover herself from the situation.
