Rising country singer/songwriter Chase Wright recently dropped his new single “Why Should We,” and he’s premiering the music video exclusively for readers of Country Now.
Directed by Josh Holt, the accompanying video opens up with the 24-year-old Wright dressed in a casual pair of jeans, a v-neck t-shirt, and a black bomber jacket. Throughout the clip, the Indiana native and former collegiate track star can be seen earnestly singing the song to his fictional love interest from behind a microphone and amid a backdrop of bright neon lights. The lights surrounding Wright give viewers a fresh take of the country bar scene that fans are accustomed to seeing in country music videos.
“I’d always had this image of neon lights and downtown and bars and those bright lights. So there has always been this image in my head of a red and blue neon light,” Wright told Country Now of his vision behind the music video. “I wanted to capture that in the video. But, I didn’t want to do the traditional bar scene that maybe you’d seen in other country music videos. We wanted to put a different spin on it yet still keep those red, blue, and white neon lights in there. So that’s where the idea of the lighting set-up came from were those downtown neon lights.”
“Why Should We,” written with Gary Garris and Levi Hummon, and produced by Zach Abend, has been organically gaining popularity through digital streaming services, earning over 100,000 plays since it’s debut on Friday (Jan. 15). The up-tempo tune follows Wright’s previous cut, “Wish You’d Miss Me,” which dropped in October of 2020.
“‘Why Should We’ came from a feeling that I was having after I had been in Nashville for about a year, where there’s this pressure to go out and be in the social scene,” Wright said of the inspiration behind the track. “It was coming from that honest place, like ‘Why should we do this when we know we don’t want to,’ you know? So it was coming from that place. But I realize during the promo is that people are taking the lyrics in their way too. So, I’ve been liking to see where people are applying their spin to it.”
Wright, who first picked up the guitar four years ago, made the permanent move to Nashville shortly after graduating from DePauw University. Once in Music City, he quickly caught the attention of industry veterans, landing a publishing deal with Toby & Molly Music, and signing on with Morris Higham Management for exclusive representation. He introduced himself to listeners earlier last year with his debut song, “My Kind of Morning,” penned alongside Matt and Josh Jenkins.
Fans can look for more music from Wright soon, as he plans to release a brand new track every eight weeks throughout 2021.
