Keith Urban just dropped his first new single of the year, a reflective track called “God Whispered Your Name.”
The mid-tempo song, written by James Slater, Shy Carter, Micah Carter and Chris August, finds the country music superstar and reigning ACM Entertainer of the Year leaning on his spiritual side and praising his better half for being there for him during the dark times. The aid of his true love helps him heal and find a new perspective in the tune, enough to become a changed man.
“When God whispered your name / That’s when everything changed / Love came out in the rain / Talk about being saved,” Urban sings throughout the chorus, while accompanied by organs and a grooving beat. “Suddenly, I wanna live / More than I ever did / I’m never gonna be the same / When God whispered your name.”
Urban, who initially performed “God Whispered Your Name” during Nashville’s Country Radio Seminar last week, didn’t write the faithful tune. But he did make note that he was drawn to the song’s introspective lyrics the day he first heard them. There was one line in particular that, for him, really struck a chord.
“‘God Whispered Your Name’ really spoke to me the very first time I heard it,” Urban shared in a statement. “The opening line – I was so cold and lost/and nothing seemed to ring true – God, I know that place so well, and the rest of the song unfolded, and I just followed it every step of the way.”
“At the end of the day, if I’m gonna record a song that I didn’t write, like this one, then it’s gonna be a song that speaks to me strongly. And ‘God Whispered Your Name’ spoke to me and tells my journey in such a profound way,” he continued. “Going through a season in life of being very lost and lonely and confused and not knowing how to get out of that, and then the chorus hits — ‘God Whispered Your Name,’ and everything starts to open up and become clear. And that second verse when it said, ‘I can feel the sunshine for the first time in a while, again, was just, it just went right to the core of me. And (it was) the most extraordinary song, and I just knew right then and there I had to get into the studio and record it.”
This year is already shaping up to be a big one for Urban. Aside from releasing new music, he announced he will be hosting the 55th annual ACM Awards. This will be Urban’s first time hosting the event. He is also nominated for ACM Male Artist of the Year.
“As if having a new song out today wasn’t enough, I also get to host the ACM’s in April,” said Urban. “I’ll tell you – this year already feels like the most creative and energized year of my life… and there’s so much more to come. Incredibly grateful – and ready to roll!”
The 2020 ACM Awards will air live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Sunday (April 5) at 8 p.m. on CBS. “God Whispered Your Name,” meanwhile, is the follow up to Urban’s previous single, “We Were,” released last year. Both songs will be included on his upcoming yet-untitled album, due out at a later date.
