Justin Moore is speaking his mind about the current state of country music and the rise in genre-bending artists making their way into the industry with his new song, “Put A Boot In It.”
The clever tune aims to call out those who come to Nashville with their unauthentic country twang and try to make a profit off of a lifestyle that they have never truly lived. Although Moore is making a bold statement with these lyrics, he assures that his goal was to have some lighthearted fun and create a song different than anything he has ever done before.
“It’s a song that was just an attitude. It’s a Honky Tonk, kind of fun tune that’s basically about keeping country music… well, you know, twangy, and REAL country,” says Moore. “It’s definitely tongue-in-cheek and isn’t meant to be offensive by any stretch to any other artist out there who does the other stuff.”
He certainly accomplished this mission not only within the lyrics, but also sonically as he alternates between a set of steady modernized beats on the verses and a more upbeat, vibrant rhythm in the chorus that shines a light on that traditional country twang that Moore holds close to his heart.
He adds, “It really came to life in the studio because we did something completely different than when we originally wrote it. The verse sounds completely different than the chorus when it comes to instruments and speed, which is pretty neat. It’s really nothing like I’ve ever recorded.”
“Put A Boot In It” was produced by the multi-platinum-selling artist’s longtime collaborator Jeremy Stover, and written by Moore with Will Bundy, Randy Montana and Jeremy Stover.
The 12x No. 1 hitmaker holds nothing back as he illustrates the exact type of person that this song was inspired by. He claims to be able to see their “BS” from “a red dirt mile away” and can easily pick up on their forced southern slang because he knows that in reality, they’re “more country club” than true country.
“I ain’t buying what you’re selling right now/ I’m about to take your brand-new skinny jean sound,” Moore sings as he finishes out on the first verse before illustrating his plan of action on the chorus.
“And put a boot in it/ And make that Tele sing when I smooth bend it/ Take it on down to the honky tonk/ Like a Haggard song/ If you want this ol’ boy to listen/ You better put a boot in it.”
“Put A Boot In It” follows the release of Justin Moore’s current Top 15 and climbing single “This Is My Dirt.” Both tracks are set to be featured on his forthcoming album, expected out this Fall.
The country singer is currently making his way between various fairs and festivals across the US, and will soon kickstart his co-headlining Country Round Here Tonight Tour with Randy Houser in September.
