Lainey Wilson dishes on the sweet story behind the proposal from her fiancé Devlin “Duck” Hodges and gives an update on their wedding planning progress.

During her most recent No. 1 party, where the songstress celebrated her latest chart-topping hits, “Wildflowers And Wild Horses” and “4X4XU,” she revealed how before she was swept off her feet by the ultimate surprise, she predicted something was up.

“I’ll spill the tea,” Wilson said to Country Now and other outlets with a big smile on her face. “So I had talked myself into thinking he was going to do it that day, and then I called my sister. I said, ‘I think he’s going to propose to me today.’ And she was like, ‘I got to go.’”

Wilson says she eventually put her suspicions behind her as to not get her hopes up.

“I talked myself out of it because I thought, man, I’m sure I would be upset if I had talked myself into this, and it don’t happen.”

Planning The Perfect Proposal

She then goes back a bit to explain how the former Pittsburgh Steelers Quarterback managed to plan the entire set up behind her back. It all began when they made plans to visit the George Jones $5.95 million Estate in Franklin, Tennessee alongside her manager, Mandelyn Monchick, and songwriting buddy Jon Decious.

“His buddy had it listed for sale. And we were at the Super Bowl the weekend before, and he was like, ‘Hey, we need to go next week to go see the George Jones Estate.’”

Since it wasn’t just going to be the two of them, Wilson thought it would be a casual day with friends and colleagues who were all eager to say they’d visited the estate of the late country music legend. But as soon as they arrived, the “4x4xU” singer quickly realized her previous suspicions were spot on.

“And then as we pull up, I realized that there were different plans,” she continued, reflecting on the moment. “So he had it all set up. He had the candles and the picture frames, and it could not have been more perfect.”

Hodges Designed The One-Of-A-Kind Ring

As soon as the couple shared the news on social media on Feb. 12, fans couldn’t help but gush over the stunning ring that the Louisiana native joked was so big it weighed her down. This one-of-a-kind piece was custom designed by Hodges in collaboration with Hollie Winter Fine Jewelry. The design itself is a combination of several different ring styles that Wilson had sent her man early on in their relationship.

“Honestly, as a joke, right when we first started dating, because we knew pretty much immediately we were like, ‘okay, we’re going to be in each other’s lives.’ It just felt that natural. And as a joke, I had texted him some big rings. Being like, ‘this is what I like.’ He was like, ‘oh Lord, I better start saving now.’ Well, so we’ve been together for four years and what he did is he went in and designed it and kind of put some of those rings together that I sent him,” Wilson.

She then admitted, “I would have said yes if it was just a tiny little thing” and joked, “But he messed up.”

Wilson Talks Wedding Plans

The lovebirds have been engaged for almost two months already, but between both of their incredibly busy schedules Wilson says they “haven’t even started planning.” However, she and her fiancé are aiming to “really sit down and make that a priority” soon. When the big day finally comes around, she pictures it will likely be “something very, very simple.”

Lainey Wilson can confidently say that she has found the person who will always be in her corner and constantly acts as her “biggest cheerleader, my best friend” and “one of my biggest champions.” The best part is that, with his career outside of the music industry as a licensed real estate agent and a duck hunter, Wilson is able to truly separate her personal life from her professional life when she’s at home.

“He knows just enough about the music business to not drive me insane. It’s nice to be able to go home to somebody who really doesn’t have a dog in the race, and I can separate these worlds because this is my world, but it is important to be able to go home and turn it off, and he makes it real easy to write love songs,” she sweetly admitted. “I can’t believe I’m saying that. Hopefully he’s not in here because he’s going to be the big head, but he’s a good person.”

In between all her upcoming festival appearances, Lainey Wilson has a few more months to dedicate to wedding planning before launching the U.S. leg of her Whirlwind World Tour. The trek will return on August 14 and continue through November.
