Sometimes, the best things come when you least expect them. That was the case for Harper Grace and Franklin Jonas when their just-released duet, “IDK,” came to life the first time they stepped into a writing room together.
Reflecting on how this collaboration came to be, Harper explained that they had the opportunity to watch each other play in a few different settings and seeing Franklin live is what immediately sealed the deal for her. So as soon as he found himself taking a trip to Nashville, they jumped at the chance to create together.
How The Story Of ‘IDK’ Came To Be
Both of the artists came into the writing session with a few ideas and references, and after an honest conversation about some of their own life experiences with dating and relationships, the story of “IDK” fell out. Both artists hold co-writing credit on the song alongside Cooper Bascom, who produced the track with Tedd T.
“[We] kind of came up with this idea around a dialogue between two people trying to figure out where this relationship’s going to go, what’s going to happen, and wanted to harp on some classic country duets and folk Americana duets, and it just became what it is,” Franklin explained to Country Now. “It became these two characters that are inspired by true life but also have a life of their own. And we try and bring that to performances, which is so much fun too.”

The poignant country ballad explores the uncertainty of love as two people struggling to navigate the confusion a fragile relationship let their concerns out in the open. Lyrically, listeners will find hesitation, vulnerability and a desperate search for answers in a connection that seems destined for heartbreak, even though the lovers can’t get themselves to walk away from each other.
“I’m a dreamer/ Wanna believe her/ I’ve been hoping for something I don’t know/ I get caught up/ I get stuck up/ In the moments trying to find somewhere we don’t know/ Maybe I will/ Maybe I won’t/ Maybe we’ll find something that we don’t know,” they come together to sing on the haunting chorus.
Blending Their Wide Range Of Musical Influences
Harper’s rich, emotive vocals seamlessly intertwine with Franklin’s warm delivery as they take turns on the verses, creating a heightened tension among the stripped-down production. With both singers drawing from their genre-defying influences, “IDK” incorporates elements of country, folk, and Americana while giving a nod to classic storytelling with a modern feel.
“I think there’s a lot of different ideas that collide on the song,” Franklin shared of the tune’s unique sound. “We wanted it to kind of feel like something you could pick up in a Starbucks in 2008. But also with that, we wanted it to be fresh and new and contemporary, but still have some roots in the kind of music that we both love, whether that’s a more pop countryside or say a more Appalachian folky Americana energy and try and bridge those two worlds in a way that does both of them justice, but relying on some of the lessons learned from the great Nashville duets of age old past, I’ll sing low parts you sing the highs.”
Performing At JonasCon
Just two days after the song’s release, Harper and Franklin got to perform for their loudest crowd yet at JonasCon. This one-day fan event was held at American Dream Mall in New Jersey on Sunday, March 23 in celebration the 20th anniversary of the sibling trio, the Jonas Brothers, which features Franklin’s three older brothers – Nick, Kevin and Joe Jonas.
This performance in front of thousands of screaming fans wasn’t originally in the plans, however it just so happened to come at the perfect time for the collaborators. They revealed they had only showcased it together once before in a much more intimate setting at Nashville’s 2025 Country Radio Seminar (CRS), but the massive audience at JonasCon was nothing short of “amazing.”
“Honestly, this whole time that the song’s been out and even the experience at JonasCon, it’s been really encouraging. I think that Franklin and I can both confidently say that we’ve never gotten this much just positive responses in a song and in just a short amount of time as well,” Harper admitted. “I mean, like he said, it wasn’t planned to come out before JonasCon. We had that date set for a while and getting to play it there…people were already in the audience singing the chorus and other parts of the song, and it’s just really, really amazing.”
This special moment further proved how well fans connected to the relatable storytelling of “IDK,” something the artists hoped for from the start.
“Luckily, this has been a song for both Franklin and I to really connect with people and say that you’re not the only one that has uncertainty of life in general, whether that’s a romantic relationship or just whatever your life looks like,” Harper continued. “There’s so much uncertainty in so many aspects of life, and I think that’s the beauty of it all, and that’s really what we were hoping to capture with ‘IDK’, and it’s been encouraging to know that that is what is being captured just from responses that we’ve gotten from the live performances, and it’s just been really beautiful.”
What’s Coming Next For Harper Grace And Franklin Jonas?
In terms of what’s next for these two artists, they are both excited to continue pursuing their solo careers and will hopefully have more to share with fans about wants coming in the near future.
“We’ve really enjoyed working together and it seems really effortless and super fun and it’s super enjoyable,” said the songstress. “And so in hopes of doing more things together in the future, we’re both working on a lot of our own individual music as well and hoping for those projects to come out. It’s just nice to be able to focus on one thing at a time, but still have a desire to get stuff out in the future. But really just wherever the wind blows.”
Franklin also noted that he has thoroughly enjoyed testing the waters with Harper’s country fanbase and is interested in continuing to make music inspired by the genre that he hold such a deep appreciation for.
“It’s incredible,” Jonas said. “I mean, I think this trip where we wrote this song a little over a year ago was me kind of wondering to see how it would sound if I touched this genre that I loved, that I was really afraid to get into and allow myself to be a part of. And it kind of proved some stuff for me that I could do it, and it’s been really incredible to have this song be sort of the stepping stone, at least for the public’s ears, as I transition a bit and try new things and who knows what might come that.”
Additionally, they both expressed their desire to get more opportunities to showcase “IDK” together in the future. “Whoever will have us,” Franklin stated.
“We do have hopes and some plans of getting the chance to sing this song live as many times as we possibly can,” Harper added.
Luckily, Harper Grace and Franklin Jonas already have another appearance lined up, as they were recently added to this year’s Live in the Vineyard Goes Country lineup, set to take place in Napa Valley in April.
