Megan Moroney’s hilariously clever track “Man On The Moon” has quickly become a fan-favorite, especially in her live shows. Although the storyline fits perfectly into her just-released sophomore album, Am I Okay? , the female songstress recently revealed it almost didn’t make the cut on the final track list.
During an interview with Audacy’s Rob + Holly, Moroney admitted that the song was nearly held back because she wasn’t satisfied with where the song was at and ended up having to rewrite the second verse and bridge.
In doing so, she created the perfect storm of frustration and readiness to move on, which paints a clear picture of all the messiness that situationships bring. Moroney serves as a co-writer alongside Ashley Gorley, Casey Smith and David “Messy” Mescon. These songwriters found the perfect way to describe the desire to get a man out of your life after he’s done you wrong, but just a “town or state” away isn’t far enough, so they came up with the idea to send him straight to the moon.
“I feel like a lot of us can relate to this, but situationship vibes, they like you and then they don’t like you, and then they’re calling and then they ghost you. And it’s just like, I am sick of this. Can you please go somewhere else? AKA the moon,” she shared of the song’s inspiration.
To coincide with the song’s theme, she was photographed wearing a shiny silver space suit while holding a bright red flag.
“Immediately when we wrote that song, I had the visual of me in the space suit that we executed. So it’s a fun one that’s kind of just like, ‘oh, I’m over it. Can you please go somewhere else?’”
Fans have come to love the upbeat nature of the tune as well as the relatable narrative that best sums up how so many people feel about an ex they can’t see to get away from. As a result, those attending her live shows have begun bringing clever posters with messages inspired by “Man On The Moon” that solidify the fact that Moroney is not alone in her experience.
One of the posters she has been captured reading from the stage says, “Begging To Send This Man To The Moon.” Another fan wrote, “Megan, how much room is in the rocket?”
Having all this support from fans has made Moroney feel comfortable enough to be so vulnerable on this album and as she assured her listeners on socials, as long as she has that support, she will “always be just fine.”
The full-length Kristian Bush produced project was mainly recorded live with a full band at Nashville’s legendary Blackbird Studio and follows her debut album, Lucky.
In songs like “Man On The Moon,” “No Caller ID,” “Hell of a Show” and more, she wears her heart on her sleeve and illustrates deeply painful moments that have taken place throughout her dating history. She also demonstrates heartbreak beyond relationships, brings empowerment to her stories and even includes a song just for “The Girls.”
Overall, listeners will experience a rollercoaster of emotions while taking in each of the 14 tracks. Am I Okay? has only been out for a few days, but the 26-year-old admits she already has album number three in the works.
Megan Moroney is currently enjoying her time out on the road as a supporting act for Kenny Chesney’s Sun Goes Down Tour 2024. The pair have been shutting down stadiums across the U.S. and will continue to do so until the trek wraps up on August 25.
