Today (Feb 9.), Nate Smith unveils his blazing new heartbreak anthem, “Bulletproof,” which also serves as the title track to his just-announced EP, Through the Smoke.
Coming out strong with another heavy hitter on his hands, “Bulletproof” offers a remedy for the kind of heartbreak that feels it could withstand just about anything and still stick around. Smith’s emotions are on full display as finds himself hitting the bottom of the bottle in an attempt to drown out the pain. He tries just about everything, but while his former love interest is no longer in the picture, her memories seem to remain clear as day in his mind.

“I Knew I Wanted To Cut It”
Smith explained that as soon as he heard the track penned by Ashley Gorley, Ben Johnson, and Hunter Phelps, he knew the epic guitar plucks and steady drumbeats of the anthem needed to be added to his discography.
“Ashley Gorley, who is one of the co-writers on ‘World On Fire’ with me, wrote ‘Bulletproof’ and had sent it to me. I immediately loved it. I thought the beginning had a Tom Petty vibe to it and then the chorus has this massive lift. It sounded like an anthem, and I knew I wanted to cut it.”
He added, “I’ve dealt with some heartache throughout my life, and I’ve also been the deliverer of heartache to some. It’s funny because we think sometimes that alcohol is gonna make you forget the person, but often times it brings it right back up. There are so many things we can try to do to get over someone we love, but really time is the only thing that can help.”
New Music Video
Additionally, the song was paired with a brand-new music video that gives features a compilation of footage from Nate Smith’s most recent time on the road – from selling out renowned venues to meeting fans, hanging out with his bandmates backstage and seeing the rise in energy “Bulletproof” brings to his live shows.
“I’ve tried Jack, I’ve tried Jim I’ve tried every last one of them Ol’ heartbreak bottles up on that shelf But the burn don’t work and the buzz don’t help Been taking these shots, shots, shots 80, 90, everything they’ve got But the whiskey don’t kill like it’s supposed to do Baby, your memory must be bulletproof,” Smith delivers on the chorus.
Watch
The new releases follow the Paradise, California native’s eight-week No. 1 smash hit, “World On Fire.” Since Country Airplay began in 1990, only three other songs have held the top position on the charts for this long, meaning Smith’s “World On Fire” now ties Morgan Wallen’s “Last Night,” Alan Jackson and Jimmy Buffett’s “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere” and Lonestar’s “Amazed” for the second-longest No. 1 chart reign.
New Seven-Song EP Coming In April

“Bulletproof” is one of seven songs to be featured on his Through The Smoke EP, due April 5. Smith took to social media to share titles of the remaining unreleased songs set to appear on the track list of the forthcoming project.
Nate Smith shared about the project, “I’ve been through a lot of adversity in my life, but ‘through the smoke’ came to mind one day and I thought that was the perfect way to describe making it through tragedy. It captures what it looks like on the other side of heartbreak, on the other side of tragedy, on the other side of giving everything you’ve got to go after what you want to do in life. I think this EP is a transition between all the fire and pain and everything I went through, and then overcoming. And that’s what I want people to feel. It’s layered in there.”
“Through The Smoke” EP Track List:
- Bulletproof
- Wish I Never Felt
- Here’s To Hometowns
- Make it With You (Feat. The War and Treaty)
