Cody Johnson returned to Globe Life Field in Arlington, TX on Tuesday, July 16, to deliver his rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” at the MLB All-Star Game presented by Mastercard.

As he stepped onto the field dressed in his Texas best, Johnson took in his surroundings, removed his cowboy hat and began belting out the beloved tune. Johnson’s buttery vocals perfectly captured the sentiment behind every lyric of the National Anthem while also showcasing immense pride until the very last note. By the sounds of the cheers erupting from the massive crowd, there’s no doubt that he hit the performance out of the park.

Joining Johnson in the pregame events of the July 16 game was Texas Rangers legend and recent Hall of Fame inductee Adrian Beltre, who threw out the first pitch alongside fellow Rangers Hall of Famers Fergie Jenkins, Ivan Rodriguez and Nolan Ryan.

The 37-year-old’s appearance at the highly anticipated game follows Ingrid Andress’ viral performance of The National Anthem on Monday, July 15.

Previous “Star-Spangled Banner” Performances

This isn’t the first time the “Dirt Cheap” singer has been tapped to perform the National Anthem ahead of a major sporting event. He previously sang the patriotic tune at the 2021 NASCAR cup series, at Game 7 of the 2018 ALCS between the Astros and Red Sox, at Game 7 of the 2019 World Series between the Astros and Nationals, and at the Astros’ Opening Day in 2023. Additionally, back in March of 2023, he experienced a full circle moment at Globe Life Field when he took center stage as the headlining act of The American Rodeo.

Along with his performance history, Johnson also had the honor of kickstarting the 2024 baseball season by throwing out the ceremonial first pitch at the Texas Rangers vs. Seattle Mariners home game earlier this spring.

The Inaugural COJO Open

As if it wasn’t clear enough that he is incredibly proud of his Texas roots, Cody Johnson recently announced plans for the inaugural COJO OPEN team roping event. Before he was a country star, the former bull rider admits his life was consumed by team roping and it remains the thing that acts as his escape from the “smoke and lights.”

“When I’m out there horseback with a rope in my hand, I just get to be who I am at the core, and that’s a cowboy. I plan to participate in every roping event and I will even play golf,” he shared in a recent release.

Now, he’s using his experience and following in the footsteps of George Strait’s Team Roping Class to create his own event that might one day achieve his goal of becoming the biggest roping event in the United States.

“When I step out on stage, I don’t want to just play a show. I want it to be the best show you’ve ever seen. I want this roping to be the same way. This hat is real, this buckle is real, this music is real and this roping will be real, too,” he adds.

Giving Back To Charity

Taking place October 15-19 at Cadence Bank Center Arena in Belton, Texas, the COJO OPEN will benefit the Texas FFA and the Different Day Foundation, a charity that he and his wife, Brandi created to provide housing, healthcare and empowering employment to women who’ve been victims of sex trafficking in America.

“I want this roping to not only grow into a life-changing event that pays ropers a pile of money and prizes, but also generates enough for charity that we change people’s lives who don’t know a steer’s head from his tail. It’s very important to me to give back, and putting on this roping keeps me very connected with my love of the game. And just like I started my music career in a van and a trailer and then moved up to a tour bus, this week of roping has the potential to grow into something huge.”

Entries are open and tickets are on sale NOW at CoJo Team Roping.com.
