Stepping into Hollywood Week as a Season 24 contestant on American Idol, Genevieve Heyward brought a mix of nerves and determination, ready to pour herself into Brandi Carlile’s “The Story.” At 26, the Lake Geneva, WI native knew every note mattered for this performance, as it would determine her fate in the competition.
She decided to listen to the advice from judge Luke Bryan during her audition and push herself even more this time around in an attempt to stand out among her peers.
“For this performance, they’re going to see me bring a little more of whatever they were looking for, especially with the band. Once that band started, I was like, oh yeah, I’m ready. I got this.”

Even though she appeared confident, she didn’t deny that the nerves of performing in front of the judges again, as well as a packed audience, were getting to her.
“Every time you hear the audience, a little part of me is going to throw up,” Genevieve told the camera before hitting the stage. She also joked that “no one’s admitting that they’re nervous,” but she wasn’t hiding it and encouraged others to do the same.
Just as she noted, as soon as the band kicked in, she found her rhythm. She captured the song’s intimate honesty, conveying both vulnerability and strength as she brought Brandi Carlile’s lyrics to life. Even with nerves bubbling underneath, her performance showed the judges that she has the ability to connect deeply with a song while commanding the stage. Her incredible vocal range drew smiles and cheers from the audience as snatched the mic from the stand and moved from one end of the stage to the other like a true star.
Bryan once again was the first to jump in with feedback. He commended her on the palpable energy that radiates from the stage while she performs, insinuating that he was happy with what she brought this round.
“You had this energy around you that you just feel like you want to be on stage like owning the moment and you should be very, very happy. Good job,” he stated.
After finding her way off stage, Genevieve reflected on the praise she had just been given as well as the standing ovation from the judges.

“Oh my God, that was so cool. They stood up. Let’s go,” she said with excitement. “I feel like I won Luke over a little bit. I feel really good about that.”
While the judges deliberated on their own, Carrie Underwood also noted, “She’s got that rock kind of thing at the top.” Lionel Richie agreed, “She was clear. It’s good.”
Genevieve later admitted she was in “disbelief” over learning her performance was enough to get her into the “Golden Room,” where she and a carefully selected group of contestants waited to learn if they would be making it into the Top 30.
By the end of the episode, Lionel Richie, Carrie Underwood and Luke Bryan revealed that Geneveive was among those who had “survived Music City” and were officially moving forward in the competition.
Next week, she will join his year’s American Idol class and head to Hawaii. They will each have the chance to perform on the stage at Disney’s Aulani Resort, but the judges won’t be determining their fate. Instead, the singers will compete in the “Ohana Round,” where feedback and decisions will come from three new perspectives: the Idols themselves, their families, and industry experts. These outside votes will reveal who makes it into the Top 20.
New episodes of American Idol air Monday nights at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on ABC, with episodes available to stream the following day on Hulu.
