Grace Tyler is setting out to mend some broken hearts with her latest EP, Everything I Didn’t Say.

When starting the process of building out her next project and deciding on the messages she wanted to portray through the songs, the rising star learned a valuable lesson. She opened up to Country Now about “praying for inspiration” but quickly discovered that the age old saying, “be careful what you wish for,” holds some real truth.

“God answers your prayer,” she said with a laugh.

At the time, the Texas native found herself weighed down with heartbreak as she had just gotten out of a four-year relationship that ended on she and her ex’s four-year anniversary. Tyler did what any good songwriter does and worked through her feelings by turning them into songs. Through that journey, she also discovered a lot that she wished she had said to her ex in their final moments together, and this is how the title, “Everything I Didn’t Say” came to be.

“It was the worst. But after that, I think when you’re breaking up with somebody, you’re going through the motions, there’s a ton of things that you think of afterwards that you’re like, ‘man, if I could have just said that to them in the moment, if I could have told them this.’ And I ended up texting my manager a day or two after the breakup, and I was just like, ‘I just want to say everything I didn’t say, and that’s what I want this music to be,’” Tyler explained.

This idea evolved into a six-song project that is sequenced in chronological order of the emotions she experienced at the end of the relationship, documenting all the different stages of grief with grace and honesty.

She starts off at the moment she realizes the breakup is inevitable, capturing the first stage of raw emotions in “Don’t Want To Know.” From there, the songstress reclaims her peace in “Weak Man” and “Lose Me,” admits to wanting her ex to feel a bit of jealously as she moves on in “I Wanna See You,” and ultimately finds reassurance in “She Wasn’t Crazy,” realizing his past exes knew what they were doing when they walked away.

“It kind of walked you through the stages of grieving and moving on relationship. And for me, this was the person I thought I was going to be with forever. I thought I was getting married this year and I’m definitely not. I thought I was getting engaged this year, not married, but I thought that was where my life was heading,” she admits. “So this is kind of just the closing of a chapter for me with this project. It kind of walks you through just the defeat and the acceptance of watching a relationship to end and all the things that you think of past the point of where you speak to that person anymore.”

Finally, Tyler brings the project full circle with “I Hope You Have A Daughter,” which can easily be seen as one of the most emotional and sentimental songs on the whole collection. It also serves as an incredibly special moment for the singer/songwriter as it is the only solo write on the EP and it pays tribute to her dad’s role in her healing process.

“Honestly it was a song that I was like, I don’t know if this is good enough. I just wrote it by myself with a glass of wine just crying over my piano. I don’t know if this is going to make it,” she admitted. “My mom was really the one who was like, ‘you have to release this song. This song is so good.’ The first time I played it, just seeing these grown men, these dads, these little girls or even dads with boys…just seeing that this song and that the thing that I had been thinking and these thoughts going through my mind could impact somebody so much, it was just really cool, especially a song that was written all by myself.”

The song finds the Texas native hoping that one day, when her ex is married to someone else and grows his family, that he has a daughter so that he can finally understand all the hurt he caused Tyler when they were together. Heartbroken women everywhere will understand the sentiment behind these powerful lyrics, but it will also hit close to home for any fathers who have seen their children go through the pain of a failed relationship and having to be there to pick up the pieces.

“My dad is the greatest man I’ve ever met. I think my bar for relationships and for men is so high because he is just the greatest. And he took the heart that he didn’t break and helped heal it back together…He is seeing firsthand just the consequences of being young and stupid and a boy and what that can do to a girl. And just seeing how he just stepped up in a way that, again, he didn’t break my heart. He was a huge part in healing.”

Every single word sung in Everything I Didn’t Say is a direct reflection of Grace Tyler’s real life. There’s no denying that she poured her heart and soul into these songs, and she hopes listeners will not only hear that authenticity but also find their own healing in their stories.

“I hope these songs just bring just peace to people,” she stated honestly.

Opening up on this level has not been easy for Tyler, but what’s getting her through is seeing the positive reaction from her fans and knowing that her younger self would have been incredibly proud of her for putting herself out there in that way.

“It felt like if there ever was a time to be open and honest, this is the time. And in a time that I felt so isolated and thought, oh my gosh, nobody else could understand what I’m going through, I found out so many people know what I’m going through. And I never would’ve if I hadn’t have opened up the way I did.”

She continued, “There’s been times where I’ve pulled these songs out and I’m like, this wasn’t written about this guy, but why does it actually work now? And so I think just having music that is able to connect to myself, but also other people, I think she’d be so proud of that and would be proud that I’m writing songs that hopefully one day little girls are going to get up on stage and sing karaoke too. That’s the ultimate goal.”

Grace Tyler will spend the first half of the year honing in on her songwriting and figuring out what comes next. Fans will also be able to catch her performing at a few festivals over the summer.
